Help Galaxy S is somewhat laggy

Are you using some task manager?
I have task killer installed but its not running in the background. I installed since it was laggy.
I've used quadrant benchmark and scored 1684 and I saw that people got over 2000. Please assist me getting there.
This is what I've done so far:
1. Installed Z4ROOT on froyo 2.2 and rooted the phone.
2. Installed OCLF and then installed EXT2 tools.
3. Used oneclicklagfix V2+ and allowed 1024MB.
4. Went to alter minefree and used strict and checked to remember after reboot.
5. Went to change scheduler and used deadline with tweaks checked and remember reboot.
How can I improve things?

If after doing so much you still find it lagging then I am afraid there might not be many options left.
I normally dont have a issue with my phone. It lags evertime the application is installed from the market and apart from that its generally fine. And I manually kill apps with the help of task manager to free up memory so other times it works well.
I do find the galaxy S laggy at times. Worst is when I'm connecting to the Android market, installing apps or updates form there. The HTC Desire does this in a fraction of the time. It's only the larger screen and decent battery (compared to the Desire) that keeps me with the Galaxy S. The lag can be terrible (sometimes between 20-50seconds to come up with the Market place). Apart from that most apps run ok most of the time, though I have had things freeze from time to time. I don’t know if this is the Galaxy or what '3' have done to the phone.

Samsung have been working for some time on an improved filesystem.
It was hoped it would have been released with Froyo but has been delayed several times.
I'm still hopeful it will surface soon. Your first port of call may be at samfirmware.com

I have lagfix on my phone and have the deadline file system selected. Every so oftne when doing things it just stops then after a few seconds catches up with itself. It seems to happen a lot when I am typing text.
AFTER updating you need to do a factory reset. My galaxy was really laggy after updating so i done a factory reset and the phone has been supperb for 2 weeks now. I installles the lagfix to see what difference it made and in all honesty i cant notice much increase in speed.
So try a factory rese.

I also performed a factory reset after my phone and still I've found 2.2 far more laggy than it's predecessor.
I went into my local O2 store and he told me that apps like Advanced Task Killer could contribute to the lag as Android is designed to make unused apps in the background idle. Can anyone shed some light on this?

In general this is quite correct....
One should not terminate a program simply because it is no longer needed.
However, there are occasions when you need to terminate a program manually and this is where some form of Task Killer comes in hand.
I have often been blighted with a program that misbehaves or gets into a loop either slowing the phone down, draining the battery as it hits the CPU relentlessly or simply locks out and won't let you use that particular program.
Now a Task Killer is required as nothing short of rebooting your phone is going to solve the issue.
What I would stress though is rather than stopping a Process/App simply because it is misbehaving, first try to understand why it is operating incorrectly and then ascertain what would be the consequences in terminating such a program.
For this I use SystemPanel which provides an abundance of information.
SystemPanel will give you much more than termination. I even use it to Archive installed Apps before installing a newer version from the Market. That way if the updated App does not perform correctly or you lose something which you liked in a previous version all you need do is use SystemPanel to bring back the Archived version saved earlier.
So my take on a Task Killer would read ~ First get hold of the right TK and second, use it as a tool and not simply an App assassin.

The lag on mine with froyo is worse than on 2.1 (this is without lag fix).
I still haven't had the courage to apply a lagfix in the seemingly naive hope that Samsung will fix it.
Slightly off topic: But the promised GPS fix hasn't really improved much in mine (still jumps around and is not that accurate in central London).
Froyo has brought some nice improvements but Samsung really know how to ruin a phone that can potentially leave the competition trailing behind.

What ROM version are you using?
Re the Lag: Samsung have been working on improving the filesystem for some time. At one stage it was believed it could have gone into the Froyo upgrade but was found to be impossible to maintain.
Although they are still working on it (info as of Sat 20th Nov) I do know there were issues with the new phones that are coming in and part of the support was pulled temporary.
There's no firm date but I'm still hopeful we will see an announcement in the next month.
As a short term fix, if the lag is that bad a can thoroughly recommend you use RyanZA's z4root and RyanZA's OCLF.
I have made several posts on these matters but RyanZA's tools make root & lagfix such a simple one-click affair.
There is no need for a PC, no need for any third-party software to install on a PC (Odin). All you need is a copy of both files and away you go.... rooted and lag fixed easy as that.
Both tools are now also available on the Market but I would first have a read on the two links I have provided so you can be fully in the picture how easy and safe it is.
Re GPS: This has become rather strange of late.....
Prior to the Froyo my GPS was totally horrendous. I couldn't get a lock for several minutes and when I did my location bounced all over the place, never maintaining an accurate lock and fix.
However, since applying the JPO ROM upgrade my SGS is now superb in all matters including GPS. Fore the very first time I get a lock in seconds and note I'm actually seeing and picking up satellites with SNR's below 20 which was totally unheard of on the SGS. Not only that but my position is always spot on pinpoint accurate. I simply now can not fault GPS and it's not drifted once since doing the upgrade coming two weeks now.
I'd like to know more on why some SGS devices are great whilst others remain poor. This however is not the right thread but I'd be happy to discuss it further with you in the relevant GPS topics.

It only lists apps that it identifies as safe to terminate.
A dedicated TK will allow you to terminate all manner of apps and processes, be that Inactive, Background, Active, Excluded or System Apps.

You are fine using SystemPanel for monitoring, in fact that is one of the prime reason's I use it myself.
Have a good look at SystemPanel though, it offers so much and unlike other TK when you elect to terminate an App or process it lists in order of relevance which tasks it feels are safe to terminate.
Also check out the Activity (click on the top row of items CPU/Memory/Storage) and ensure you have History enabled in your Settings. It will then display in graph format an accurate list of times of charging, Battery states, Device usage, CPU Activity.
