Help galaxy s updater

1, anybody recommend a good `free` updater for sgs.
2, also google maps downloaded an update yesterday unrequested, how can I stop such things happening again please.
3, spent the day trying to get connected with kiers, reading on the web etc, given up, is there any alternative that you know of.

1. Not sure what you mean here.
2. Turn off your data and wifi to stop applications accessing the internet. I doubt you can stop updates if you are online.
3. Kies is the only official way of connecting your phone to the computer but it is a bad piece of software and frequently does not work. You are not alone.

It's a pain in the bum, they've hidden the options well. You need to go into Android Market to access the update options - go to Myapps, find Maps and untick "Allow automatic updating" - Youtube does the same. It might occasionally manage to turn itself back on again.
