Galaxy S2 app storage

RhP

Lurker
I'm going to formulate this question very carefully and precisely, as I've seen it asked before but never satisfactorily answered.

I have the Galaxy S2. It has three types of storage (see Settings -> Storage):

1. internal storage (~2GB, contains my apps);

2. USB storage (~12GB, contains pictures, videos, downloads etc.);

3. external SD card (currently don't have one).

My question is as follows: How do I move some of my apps from internal to USB storage?

My reason: I have almost used all of the 2GB internal, but have plenty of USB space free, and I don't have an external SD card installed.

Please don't tell me to go to Settings -> Applications -> Move to SD card. This doesn't work. I want to move some apps to USB storage.

Thanks for your anticipated help!

You should probably ask this in the S2 forum as the answer to this type of question really depends on the device.

In fact, the way my Samsung Galaxy Player is set up, the button in manage applications is move to USB Memory and many Samsung models are set up that way. That is because Samsung mounts the USB memory on many models to /SDCARD.

If the S2 is not set up that way, it may actually require an SD card to move the apps because they left the SD card mounted at /SDCARD. If so, then you will have no option to move the apps to USB memory without finding some kind of hack that would require rooting.

See what you can find out from other folks with an S2. A good test would be to put in an sd card with content in it and then, with a file manager, see what files and folders appear in /SDCARD. If the contents of the sd card, that is where you have to move apps. If the contents of USB memory, then you should be able to move the apps there.

You can't move apps entirely to the SD card. You can move some of their components (for example, some games have a 20MB game file with 700mb extra files which can be moved to SD card).

It may be possible with root, keeping in mind that some apps will not work from the SD card.

Some apps can be moved, some cannot. Even with those that can be moved, some of the app system files must remain installed to internal storage for the app to function.

If no apps will move, then either:
A. You're only choosing non-movable apps or...
B. It is expecting to find a removable SD card to move files there.

B is the most likely culprit since you stated you didn't have one. Install a SD card and try again.
