Latitude is part of the google maps app. Your friend has an old version because google have removed that feature in the updated latitude.

I don't think this is right. I have the latest Google Maps install (6.5.0). No problems activating real time location updates with Latitude so I could track my wife's progress when she ran a half-marathon last weekend, and for her to find me afterwards.

thats right, because you both had the newest maps version. If someone on your latitude list does not have the latest version, it will not display the real time update option because their latitude version does not support it.

at least thats how I understand it.

I too have the latest install, and cannot see how real time location updates is activated.

Could you talk me through how to activate this feature (my friend also has latest update).

Start the Latitude App. There's a bar under the top row of buttons with the text "You are not reporting your location". If you click on this message the Location Settings open up, so you can set up location reporting, and which friends are able to view your position.

That's all I did. My wife did the equivalent on her iPhone, and we added each other as friends within Latitude.

Thats location reporting, not real time updating:

Like I said (although you may have misunderstood), real time updating is no longer supported as it was before.

Although location reporting is very fast anyway.
