Galaxy S2 not all equal?

Vavavroom

Picked up a new ATT S2 last week and so far so good. This is my very first Android phone so I am a total newbie.
It is an impressing device but already I am seeing stuff that ATT did to this phone, making it so that apparently all Galaxy S2 phones are not created equal.

The missing visual notification (I posted about in another thread) is one.
Missing languages support. Unless you txt/mail in one of the main languages (English, German, French or Spanish) you are pretty much left in the cold.

So I am already asking myself if I should just swallow the $35 restock and give it back or .... dive into this rooting thing which I really don't know much about. I can't stand Apple's pushy and controlling ways which is why I went Android.

How difficult is it to root this device?
Do I actually need to do it?

I see some confusing information out there about model numbers.
Most posts talk about the i9100 while mine is a i777

Any and all advice is appreciated

Welcome to android! I myself am new to android and I must say I love it.

The i9100 model is the international version of the s2. The i777 is the AT&T model which is basically identical to the international version. The sprint and T-Mobile variants are slightly different in some aesthetic areas like screen size.

Now concerning the lack of visual notification...the i777 does not come with a notification LED which I'd kinda a bummer, but don't fret...there is an apparently for that...download NoLED.

I am a lover of Google and was for Android until i was disappointed when i purchased ATT GS2 and returned it in 2 days.. Only one simple reason android didnt supported Indian Languages(Hindi, Marathi, etc.....) The browser just displayed square boxes and i was not at all happy. Nor if someone who text me or even on facebook.

I accepted to donate $35 to ATT & Google for their research on this and an immediate resolution.

How is NoLED on the battery? Much drainage?

Battery life is pretty bad to begin with on my S2.
I have to charge this phone every day and I am not playing games or doing a lot of browsing, videos and don't even have music on it.

But I did not see much difference after installing NoLed. This is only the second day I have it on there though.
It does have settings to minimize battery use.

I'm new to android myself, and the second day I got my AT&T Galaxy S2 I already rooted it and doing fine. You just have to spend some time reading about this topic, then it becomes easy and it's very unlikely that something will go bad if you follow everything and educate yourself about rooting and its privileges. :) If you decide to root here is a very simple step by step video which I used How to Root AT&T Galaxy S2! [SGH-I777] - YouTube

Great thing is that you can always go back to stock. Enjoy!
