Help Galaxy S3 crashing when copying text to clipboard

Factory reset fixes the issue, and while it is a PIA to do it's better than waiting for samsung to fix it as I've been waiting for 6 months now with no luck

I unfortunately have to add my misfortune to this thread.. Under the that it has now also affected me.. And of which also happened by copying and pasting from chrome. I am also one of the ones who refuse to FR or root my phone because it refuses to work because of bad programming.. Any non root fixes. Let me know.. Metropcs was confirmed to have JB for the S3 in Feb.. I hope my patience can last that long and also hoping that JB fixes the issue.

Hi,
Here in Singapore, Samsung promised me a fix 2 mths ago. No news to that fix. A Samsung engineer came to "fix" my S3 by rooting my phone, without wiping my data and settings. It voids my warranty coz I can't download JB 4.1.2. But I'm thankful that my phone is rooted, as it happened for the 5th time in 2 months. I have 4mths more till my warranty expires, so I pray my hardware stays strong till then.

Felix

Is this a hardware issue or a software problem. If it's the latter and Samsung plan to release the SGSIV equipped with Jelly Bean, they've really shot themselves in the foot.

It's definitely a Samsung software issue!
They've shot themselves in the foot, but they don't care as they are the top handphone makers now.
I call for a boycott of Samsung mobile!

I just wanted to add I am having the same problem on my Samsun Galaxy Reverb from Virgin Mobile. There will be to Jelly Bean for this phone as Virgin doesn't do updates, so as far as I can see my only option is a factory reset (no way) or rooting.

I rooted my Samsung Galaxy Reverb and deleted everything in /data/clipboard rebooted and my clipboard it working again.

my s3 resets itself when copying to the clipboard. :-( usually happens after copying about 15 fairly lengthy Web page links all at once, but happens at random times

stuff remains on clipboard after it resets and I can continue copy /pasting

maybe its a quick office pro problem as thats the app that it happens in 100% of the time?

Had the Galaxy S3 for a couple of weeks now and it has been great.

One thing, last weekend it started to crash any app when I tried to copy text. ...
It would be great to hear if anyone else has had this as I couldn't find any info about this problem. Or if anyone has some ideas about an easier way to fix this if it becomes more common.

Thanks :):):)

Factory reset is NOT the only option. Just go to the dialer app. In the dark area above the dialpad, long-press until you see a popup. Choose Clipboard, then Clear. You may have to reboot the phone, but this should fix it without rooting to clear the clipboard folder.

Deleting the contents of the clipboard directory and a reboot was adequate. None of the other steps mentioned were necessary for me.

Also ES File Explorer is free, and works fine.

As an aside I LOVE this GS Relay. Most things liek this that apply to the GS3 also apply to the Relay I've found. I regularly get 5100 Quadrant score, on stock ROM, with lots of intents removed bloat frozen which certainly helps perf of course. Reviewers who bagged on this phone have no idea what they are talking about (surprise).

Thanks for the posts! I knew that I hadn't updated anything (I'm using it on Simple Mobile, which I highly recommend, no personal affiliation other than being happy customer), and I had already tried wiping all caches, so it had to be something else. Now I can resume annoying my FB friends with things I think are awesome (via web AND mobile). ;)

Cheers!

Hey guys, I've read the whole thread hoping at the end of each page that the next one would announce me that a fix has been issued.. but no.
Yesterday I've encountered the same problem as you apparently all did. For me it began when I started to use Chrome, and at the beginning I only noticed that from time to time the copy wouldn't happen properly (I copied, then when I try to paste there's nothing), but I only needed to do it another time and then it was ok. Then suddenly it went totally wrong and any application would crash if I tried to copy something. But that first happened while I was using...Boat mini (I didn't imagine this could be a problem with the phone, I assumed it was a small bug in Chrome since you can expect this kind of small hitches occurring in a beta version, so I had just started to use Boat to solve this problem).
Anyway, I use copy/paste a lot (online articles -> dictionary application), so I didn't have the choice but to do a factory reset.. and then did few experiences to avoid that problem happening again.
I've noticed that when you copy several things, they ALL stay in the clipboard even after you restart the phone (!). You can check that in the S note apply or with the samsung keyboard: long touch, and select the clipboard icon.
I really don't understand how samsung hasn't find a solution for that already.. it really seems simple to just empty the clipboard for each time you copy something new.. I know it also can be handy to keep a few things in it, but I think most of the people don't use that function anyway, especially since the "clipboard" option doesn't appear in most of the applications and keyboards.
Of course ideally they should rewrite their copy/paste program so that it doesn't crash once full but just delete the oldest entries but.. they don't seem capable of it (!!).

I've tried the "clear cache" application but it doesn't clear anything..

My solution for now is the "clipper" application that allows you to clear the clipboard, even automatically..if you buy the clipper plus version.
I would recommend every person like me who has done a FR (such a pain in the ass seriously..) to use this application and clear their clipboard regularly to avoid having to do a FR again.. But again, that's still not really what one would call a "solution".
For the persons who are still struggling with this problem and haven't done a FR yet, have a try and use clipper, see if you can clear the clipboard with it!

Edit: Clipper doesn't work... The last version of "clipboard cleaner" seems to work on some devices, as on mine (galaxy SIII SC-06D) it only succeeds to delete one entry from the clipboard after freezing for a few seconds (it's actually faster to go in the clipboard by myself and delete each entry one by one). Better than nothing..

1. boot recovery (CWM) > advanced > wipe cache
2. reboot phone > Root Explorer > delete /data/clipbord/*
3. reboot recovery again > advanved > fix permissions
4. reboot phone > it's fine

HTH

whether it can be used also in the Galaxy tab 7 plus .. ?
but, i use os Ice Cream Sandwich

Please solution for this ??

Have yet to have an issue with copying to clipboard but it could be because I switch custom roms a lot and I wipe everything each time.

apologies for being dumb; how do I boot recovery (CWM)?

EDIT: ok so JFGI: i rooted my phone using http www androidauthority com/galaxy-s3-gt-i9300-root-clockworkmod-recovery-95849/

then booted into recovery following instructions:
Hold Press Volume Up +Home Button + Power Button (note: press this 3 button in the same time). Releases this 3 button when you get the Samsung Galaxy S3 Text Display on the screen. Now you will boot into CWM Recovery Mode.

then could only wipe 'dalvnic' cache (can't remember if dalvnic is sp right here)

so i wiped it...

then i bought root explorer from play store to find the folder in question...

and finally 90 minutes later... it worked... i can copy n paste again.

thanks

Link is 404, can someone provide a live link to his method, please? TIA

1. boot recovery (CWM) > advanced > wipe cache
2. reboot phone > Root Explorer > delete /data/clipbord/*
3. reboot recovery again > advanved > fix permissions
4. reboot phone > it's fine

HTH

Ugly error here folks, I've found it all over the place now with these instructions.

To wit:

the fix is below...

Damnation, this has been driving me NUTS tonight, I keep reading "advanved" and wondering wtf that was... And when I went to do it, I realized it means ADVANCED!!

Everyone needs to find their threads and posts and fix this, please, there's a lot of n00bs (like myself) who just don't get it, and lose our minds over it.

Also, I've got another problem that is related: there's nothing in /data. NOTHING. It's EMPTY. NOT A SINGLE THING IN THERE

So I've done the procedure anyway, it's in the middle of rebooting after going into CWM and following instructions, and it's doing a "Android is upgrading... Optimizing app #x of y... And now it's rebooted... It reset all my fonts to the stock arial font (bleh), but seems to be running normally, with some delays. :wtf:

EXACTLY the same problem I have, with the same basic set of applications (text, email, Chrome, and anything where you can copy/paste urls, text, and images). I've noticed that when you save an image, or do a screenshot, or even take a picture with the camera, the OS seems to handle the data as if it's all via the clipboard; and the more you do various things involving the clipboard, the sooner you get shell crashes (YES, "shell crashes", everything that happens feels EXACTLY like a Linux shell crash). I was getting this badly when it was fully stock, which devolved to no working copy/paste AT ALL. I've rooted since, and flashed JellyBean, 4.2.1 (iirc, it was before the official AT&T was available), which solved the "no copy/paste" issue, but the thing will crash the shell if I'm not careful to clear the clipboard data faithfully, especially when I KNOW I'm going to do a lot of c/p.

How do I know when it's going to crash the shell?? I have Superuser app, and it'll flash three identical messages in a row: "system was granted Superuser permission". When I see the first one pop up,I have about 3 minutes to finish whatever c/p I'm doing before the shell hangs and crashes, and I (almost) lose everything. I say "almost" because I just found I can pop into text messaging (default android version), after a crash, and find the last copies in the cache, which allows me to pick up where I left off.

I hope this helps SOMEONE working on this... I'd hate to be left without anyone doing this because the S4 is out...:(
