Help Galaxy s3 messaging?

Hello all!

So there's something that I've been curious about for a long time. When I go into my messages (for texting) there is a symbol next to one of the people I text. It's usually an orange clock for away or green circle for online. I thought this might be just for chat, but I've found that it also tells when someone is on their phone or has it locked.

Recently, its said that they are always away even when they are on their phone. So my questions:

1) Can they set it to say they are 'away' all the time?
2) Or is it something on my end that's not right?

Please help! Thank you :)

I think that may be an icon telling you that a message to that person has failed to send.

Scroll back through some recent messages, you may see the symbol next to a message you sent to them.

I get it, i use handcent.

Hope that helps.

I think that's part of it because when I log into my gmail, it shows the same thing. But I've noticed its when they're on their phone (like youtube, facebook, playing a game etc). Is that normal then? And why is it stuck on away when they are on their phone? :/

I installed hangout and it got rid of the symbol all together. It's super weird. I don't have to go into any app, just click on my text messages and when I look at all the threads I'll see the little away symbol next to their name.

It is showing their Google Talk (AKA Hangouts) status. If their phone is on, logged in, and not locked, it will be green. If it is locked, it will be yellow. This can also be set on the other person's phone.

ahh okay! so you can set your status to be away all the time? If so, how can I do that? :)

As others have stated, yes, that is the Google Hangouts (GTalk) status of the person.

Regarding your own Hangouts status, I believe Google removed this feature from the current iteration of the Android app. Previously, you could set your status, monitor others' status, etc. It doesn't seem like this option is available on Android anymore.

You can technically uninstall Hangouts, which will force your phone to fall back to the old "Google Talk" app. The older version allowed you to set up statuses and view others' status.
