Help Galaxy S3 RAM full and NEW battery empties fassssst

nita

Lurker
Hi there,

I have a Samsung Galaxy S3 that's about 2 years old. The problem I have with it is that it's extremely laggy and slow. I noticed that the RAM is contantly over 80% full, even after clearing the memory. It was formatted just a few weeks ago and the problem still remains.
Alllso, the brand new battery empties really quickly. Since I took it off charge 10 minutes ago the persentage of battery has gone down by 20.

So my conclusion is the following:
The problem is not the battery - it's bran new, not even a week old.
The phone isn't overloaded with unnecessary apps and junk because it was cleaned up and flushed just a few weeks ago.

Does anyone have a smart trick they know of that I can tey to fix my phone?

Thanks :)

Hello there nita! Welcome! :D

As far as ram, member chanchan has some good advice:
You shouldn't worry about RAM, and stop clearing memory, that's the reason why the phone is starting to get slower: you clearing memory.

Android works like Linux, not Windows, where the entire RAM is allocated to "prefetch" apps. Window only allows 50% prefetch I think. This means that the RAM is pulling the most used apps so that they take less power and start faster rather than leaving them in the background. When you clear the RAM, you are also clearing the launcher state, which is why the apps take a little time to redraw. Just reboot the phone and stop clearing RAM. Android works in a way that it gets faster a couple of weeks after you start using it, when it learns your most preferred apps.

After resetting, perhaps you have a misbehaving app that is causing your battery drain?
How good is your signal strength? Poor signal can drain battery quite rapidly;)

Hi Mikestony,

Thanks for the reply! I won't clear the memory again then. How would I be able to check if there is a malicious app?

The signal is quite good actually, I live in the city so there is strong signal everywhere. It does occasionally suddenly switch the signal off and puts Roaming on. That's another thing I don't understand, because the sim card is from a local provider. Do you have any thoughts on that perhaps?

I would download Gsam Battery Monitor from the Play Store.
Charge the device and use it as normal. Before plugging back in to charge, open the app and it will tell you what is using the battery.
I don't personally use that app, but that one is free and I've heard good things about it to narrow down battery drain issues;)

Edit: oh, and about the occasional roaming bit, I'm not sure but roaming will suck the battery too;)

Edit again: Interesting read here, albeit not your device, but some screenshots posted that you can compare to what your device says:

Hate to say it but it could be your phone has seen better days, eventually these things wear out, software grows outdated. from what I have read most of these phones are supposed to last 18-24 months, my galaxy s3 lasted till around June of last year I got it in November of 2012, the Samsung Galaxy S3 was a great phone

I guess my Galaxy S Fascinate did not go to school and larn its' "Ps" and "Qs"...

It has been in continuous use since release day 4+ years ago and is still going strong and my niece is sending about 3,000 SMS messages a month on it.

Not to say that some folks wear out the buttons, etc.... but the software is still running just fine..... it is just not fast enough to satisfy speed geeks... but she has no choice, use what I give her, or else.
