Help Galaxy S3 screen not turning off?

Okay so I'm having an issue where if I get some kind of alert, like a text message or a missed call, the screen won't turn off afterward.

Say for instance you have your phone just sitting on the table, you get a text message and your screen lights up but if you don't check it, it will turn off 2-3 seconds later, right?

Well sometimes mine doesn't. And sometimes it works normally and turns off afterward.

Like for example, last night before bed I plugged my phone in to charge and locked the screen so it was black. Later that morning when I woke up, I saw that my phone screen was lit up because I got a text message at 3 am. So the phone probably stayed lit up all the way from 3-until I woke up -___-

Talk about a battery killer, not to mention it's probably horrible for the screen to be on for THAT long.

Anyone have any clue what could be causing this or a fix for it??

The only thing I can think of is that you have it set to not turn off through the options or that it somehow magically changed itself. I am looking into this for you :)

I wouldn't even know what setting this would be under so I don't think I turned it off. Plus this would make sense, but sometimes it works completely normal like it should :/

Do you have another SMS app installed? Did you recently upgrade the firmware?

I don't have any other SMS app. I'm just using everything stock that came with the phone..haven't rooted or installed any mods. And it says I'm up to date :/

THank you all for the help. Hopefully I can figure out what's wrong. T-mobile support told me to factory reset my phone -____-

But if I factory reset won't I lose everything? I have a bunch of pictures and texts I don't want to lose :/

It would be under your phones display settings and screen timeout settings, It only allows it to be on for like ten minutes and I know that you indicated that it was on longer but its worth a shot.

Unfortunately, yes. Unless you back up your phone with your carriers back up program then it will delete everything.

It sounds like a JB fault (not really a JB fault but bugs left over that only a reset will fix).
Dont think screen timeout comes into it. Mine is set at 10mins but when i get an alert, the screen only stays on for maybe 30secs max.
Resetting is a pain but rooting the phone 1st and using a proper app data backup app makes it so much less of a headache.
Good luck man
