Help Galaxy S3 USB connection problems

Had the same issue with my wife and daughter's SG3s. My problem was that I was using the USB cord from the car charger, not the wall charger. Don't know why, but that did it for me.

Same Here! Using the USB cable that came with the phone didn't work. I plugged it in with an older USB cable (the one that came with my HTC EVO) and it worked as expected.

Hi
Since I bought my phone and faced the same and tried to get some help from the forums without any luck, I tried on my own some investigation on the issue.

Heres what I found I believe is the reason as my test proved it already :)

S3 MTP level communication uses for connectivity now for USB cable. Its both for MTP and PTP for camera.

In my case, first I cleared up the cache from the recovery mode in the Phone. (See other threads how to do that) to bring up my USB Icon in the phone stating its trying to setup the connection.
But it never does.....

Its because the security policy in the phone settings restricts it. You can find this under Settings - Security and Lock screen - Device Administrator.

If any app ( for myself it was ActiveSync app which needs this access to get setup ) was sitting there. I removed this. Voila !! It allowed the access immediately. Both for MTP and PTP.

as soon as I setup the app, the problem reoccurred. However, I confirmed that DME cllient does not do that as it does not need this Device admin right.

This also prevented my WiFi Direct feature to transfer files to other S3 devices. When I removed this constraint, both my USB problem and WiFI direct issues also got solved .

So, basically the factory reset will work on all phones as the phone is fresh with the ROM only. But if you use any app with "Device Admin" thingy as Mandatory requirement, it will restrict the USB connection. Hope this Helps Ya all .:p
hi

Im experiencing the same issue and am trying every way to connect my Galaxy Note 2 to the macbook.

"Its because the security policy in the phone settings restricts it. You can find this under Settings - Security and Lock screen - Device Administrator."

I deactivated mine which was Samsung Kies and now i can't get it back. Is it ok?

And after installing drivers, changing to MTP to PTP, i still cannot connect the two devices. I have no idea. Android File Transfers keep prompting Try reconnecting device or restarting it. When i try to connect to KIES, it doesnt even detect my phone. Tried two cables - one from my previous Note and the one from Note 2.

Please help..

Hello - I had this same problem this morning and here's how I solved it. Not sure if this will work for everyone, but it did for me. I first tried to reinstall the drivers directly, that didn't work. I tried another suggestion using Wondershare MobileGo, that didn't work either. So I reinstalled KIES, and that fixed the problem, and after I had installed KIES the MobileGo app worked awesome so I uninstalled KIES and thankfully MobileGo still worked so I am continuing to use that instead. Previous poster was right....much more user friendly.

Btw...I am a Blackberry convert of 6 years and LOVE Android. Why I didn't do this years ago is beyond me.

Had the same issue with my wife and daughter's SG3s. My problem was that I was using the USB cord from the car charger, not the wall charger. Don't know why, but that did it for me.
The car charger may not have TX/RX pins connected to enable 1A/1.5A charging.

With your GS3 attached to your computer via USB is it listed in the "Computer" screen along with all of your hard-drives? If not, on the GS3 pull down the notification bar and touch the USB entry. Set USB to MTP. If that does not work try PTP.

I have Win 7 on my computer and the GS3 connects.

I don't even have a USB entry on my pull down in the notification bar. How do you get this to appear? I have never been able to connect my s3 to my computer, it always says that the software installation fails.

I have similar issue as reported and I was able to resolve it using the steps below.

1. Disconnect the USB connector of the phone
2. Launch Kies (latest version)
3. Go to Tools> troubleshoot connection error

Hope this helps.

My conversation with Samsung:
Monica: Please disconnect the phone from PC.

Monica: Please tap on Applications>>Settings>>Developer options>>USB debugging.

Monica: Let me know if USB debugging option is grayed out.

Visitor: yes it is grayed out

Monica: Thank you.

Monica: Please turn it ON and OFF the option.

Visitor: ok, done

Monica: Please turn OFF the phone remove and re-insert battery on the phone to make the changes effective.

OK So, I had this problem too.
My phone was not detected as MTP by the computer.
My phone didn't detect that it was attached to a PC.
On my PC --It didn't work.
Another PC --It didn't work.
Even another PC --It didn't work.
Mac --It didn't work.
Tried all sorts of things written on many websites. --It didn't work.
There was no MTP option in the status bar. It just always charged using the PC.
THEN... Finally 1 day, when I was looking at the back of my CPU (PC :p) I saw my USB 3.0 Ports (the Blue ones). I had never connected anything to them. So,
Tried on a USB 3.0 Port --It WORKED! :):D:)
My phone was immediately detected as MTP. The option showed up in the status bar. I could transfer files. But then- What about my USB 2.0 Ports?
Then I did the following :
Dialed *#7248# for the PhoneUtil options.
Under 'UART' tap MODEM. Under USB, PDA.
If this is already your setting, choose the another ones (PDA for UART and MODEM for USB) and then tap SAVE and RESET.
Again dial *#7248# for the PhoneUtil options.
Under 'UART' tap MODEM. Under USB, PDA. Finally tap SAVE and RESET.
Your phone will now be detected as MTP with all types of USB Ports now. :)

I've been trying to connect my SG3 to my laptop for 3 weeks now with no success, since I bought the phone. Had this problem with my SG2 as well.

I read many people are having problems with connecting Samsung Galaxy phones to KIES, and that overall the KIES is just a pain, I wonder why SAMSUNG doesn't find a fix for these things.

Not only I can't connect my SG3 to KIES but the bigger problem is that I cannot connect it to my laptop at all. I've tried to install - installed/uninstalled the USB drivers several times - every single time failing.

When I try to connect the phone to KIES via USB or WiFi it just keeps on loading the "Connecting" pictogram.

Basically I cannot get any of my photos/videos out of the phone, cannot sync and everything else.

Any help would be much appreciated.

I am running Windows 7 64 bit.

Thanks in advance

Hi,

I had exactly this problem, and have Windows 7 Pro x64, and then I found my phone was connecting via USB as a Camera Device. If you change it to an MTP device it connects properly.

Hope this helps!

Kin dregards,

Julian

I tried to dial to change the modem setting proposed above, but get the message "Connection problem or incorrect MMI code. I have now spent two weeks reading up on every type of solution on all the forums. None of them worked. I also have the problem that the MTP Device will not install and now I have run out of ideas.
Help Please.

Hi, I don't understand your comment about "dial to change the modem setting", it is just a case of connecting your phone, pulling down the main screen and selecting change the USB connection to MPT. Apologies if I have misunderstood you and you have already tried this. Phil

Hi Phil - Check out post #38 above. paresh996 mentions dialing *#7248# to get to PhoneUtil. That's what Jeanrick is referring to. I tried dialing the number as well, but only get a Verizon message stating the call can't be completed as dialed. I'm trying to find other ways to access phoneutil, but so far have come up lacking.

Hey all. I was surfing the great wide web for GS4 USB connection to pc problems and come across this forum. By accident when I was about to give up discovered the problem. In my particular situation I simply unplugged my GS4 from the USB cord and picked up a cord that was connected to another device and BAM my phone connected to my Windows 7 pc. I then plugged my Samsung cable back into my GS4 and no go. I pushed the connector up and then down and the phone connected and then disconnected. The micro usb port in my phone is very lose inside. The other cable was like new so it fit perfect and worked great.

I fixed my USB problem, I was just about tearing my hair out!

For my problem, I had to enter the Hidden Menu, which you reach by dialing a number. What you dial is specific to the type of GS3 you have.

I stumbled upon this method on another forum which discusses flashing phones on the Howard Forums.

Basically, you enter the Hidden Menu and make sure your phone is in USB + ADB mode. If it is in any other kind of mode, (such as the modem setting!) then USB might not work with your computer.

This problem is typically caused by incomplete flashing, or, the person flashing your phone forgetting to put the settings back to normal. It can also be caused by computer sync-type programs that interact with your phone.

Here is the fix:

Sprint SPH-L710 (Galaxy S III) and SPH-L900 (Note 2)

Open Dialer enter ##3424#
When PhoneUtil Opens Select PDA
Tap Qualacomm USB Setting
Select MTP+ADB
Tap OK

.............

Verizon ]SCH-I535 (Galaxy S III) and SCH-I605 (Note 2)

Open Dialer enter *#22745927
When Enable/Disable Menu comes up tap "Hidden Menu Disabled"
Select "Enable" on Popup
Press Home button
Open Dialer
Dial **87284
When PhoneUtil Opens Select PDA
Tap Qualacomm USB Setting
Select MTP+ADB
Tap OK

.............

USCellular SCH-R530 U (Galaxy S III) and SCH-R950 (Note 2)

Open Dialer enter *#22745927
When Enable/Disable Menu comes up tap "Hidden Menu Disabled"
Select "Enable" on Popup
Press Home button
Open Dialer
Dial **87284
When PhoneUtil Opens Select PDA
Tap Qualacomm USB Setting
Select MTP+ADB
Tap OK

...............

Verizon SPH-I545 (Galaxy S4)

Dial ##DMMODE#
Tap On

........................

Sprint SPH-L720 (Galaxy S4)

There are two options to dial for diag menu on this phone
##3424# and *#7284#
One will ask for an SPC Code and One will Not
Use the one that does not ask for SPC Code
When PhoneUtil Opens Select PDA
Tap Qualacomm USB Setting
Select MTP+ADB
Tap OK

I hope this helps you guys, good luck out there!

How do I get onto applications? All I see is application manager?

Having just bought a Galaxy S3 I just could not get it to connect to my win7 laptops. Googled a bit and found this link for Samsung drivers

Android USB Drivers - Download Samsung, HTC, Hauwei, Motorola, LG USB Drivers [ADB / Fastboot] | Team Android

disconnected phone, installed the drivers and reconnected. All works now :D

Also found MobileGo android manager much more user-friendly than Kies

I was having the same issue, followed this route and problem solved. Thanks!
