Help Galaxy S3 Video FPS

Steel Rat

Newbie
Hello again All,

I've noticed with my S3 that the video frame rate (FPS) is never consistent. It's never exactly 29.97 FPS, but always some strange value well below that. For example, I just took one and the frame rate reported in Adobe Premier is 28.47 FPS. Another from a couple days ago is 27.60. As a result, when I edit videos, the soundtrack gets all out of whack with the video.

If I go back to the ones I took with my Galaxy S they're all 29.97. Something changed with either the S3, or the Android OS.

Anyone else noticed this?

Thanks

Thanks for the reply.

Power save isn't on. And it happens whether it's full sun or a darkened room.

Just wondering if someone else with an S3 could try some full HD video, and see if they get the same thing.

So after much more research, I found that some phone video cameras, such as the iPhone 4 and apparently the SGS3, record video at a Variable Frame Rate. Adobe Premiere doesn't like that, the audio goes out of synch pretty quickly.

I found many people experience the same thing.

One solution that seemed to do the trick for just about everyone (and it may seem obvious now) is to use a video conversion program that allows you to set a constant frame rate for the output video. The one recommended by a couple folks that has been working for me is called Handbrake.

The process can add considerable time to your video editing, since the conversion can take some time. But if the audio synch is an issue for you, it's well worth it.

During your research into the variable video frame rate for the Galaxy S3, did you read if it's possible to force the S3 to record at 25fps ?

I'm finding the S3 doesn't produce quality video for me because all my video needs to be reprocessed as 25fps for playback on the Australian TV Standard.

Hi. Unfortunately I didn't find a way to force a constant frame rate.

You should try Handbrake. It will do batch processing, and seems to retain the original video quality. Pretty easy to use and lots of settings. I re-process all S3 video to a constant rate of 29.97, and everything works perfectly. I just copy all my video to a separate folder on my PC, pull up handbrake, tell it to process everything in that folder using my default custom preset, and go do other things while it's processing. The output files are placed in a folder of your choice. No fuss.
