Help Galaxy S4 audio problems w/headphones

In the S4, when headphones are put in, when a notification occurs, the sound plays through both headphones and external speaker at the same time. Is it easy to disable the external speaker entirely when headphones are connected?

Also, on my old Razr MAXX with v4.1.2, notification sounds would overlap music - is it possible to re-enable this on the S4? Right now, notifications halt the music to be played and I miss the overlapping effect...

Thanks!

This isn't supposed to happen. The speakers should be disabled automatically. Has your S4 done this from the start because if it has, I suspect there may be a hardware fault.

Mine does it too.

(Although mine also goes somewhat quirky with bluetooth. I assumed both issues are related.)

Only for notifications is the sound ubiquitous. Playing music is piped through the headphones only. I do not believe this to be a hardware problem. :(
