Galaxy s4 only charges, does not mount.

I am using galaxy s4. I used to charge it through my laptop because the charger got broken. Each time my computer used to detect it. But now it doesn't. When I connect, it only charges. It doesn't even say that it "cannot mount the device" or something of that sort. The pc is simply unaware of the device. I have done an extensive reading about this issue(on other threads here and other forums) and have tried the following -

1. download mtp tools, etc. (although not required in ubuntu 15.04, as it said)
   
   
2. Try connecting the phone through windows 10, downloaded kies. Kies is also unaware of any devices that might be connected.
   
   
3. Factory reset the phone.
   
   
4. checking/unchecking the usb debugging mode and tried through all usb ports on the computer.
   
   
5. got the original samsung usb cable. (although, through this cable other phones are getting detected easily on my ubuntu.)
   
   
6. after connecting to my ubuntu, I gave the command "lsusb" on the terminal but I never get the device listed.

One thing that I can think of would be to check the hidden menu USB settings. On your phones keypad dial *#0808# to access menu. Settings should be AP and MTP + ADB. Note what yours is set on and change if needed. Press OK then use return to back out of menu or reboot option

Did that. Didn't work out. Any other ideas. It was working fine earlier....this problem started just a while ago....

Recently tried to solve similar problem with a S6 in another thread without success. He even tried this weird solution found in S3 forum involving removing / replacing sim and battery. Sometimes crazy works.

OK.. What am I doing wrong?. If I enter that code nothing happens and if I hit the dial button I get a message saying the call cant be completed. What am I missing?

What model S4? If it's Verizon i545,they lock the hidden menu. You have to be rooted and make a change in EFS folder to be able to use keypad codes.

OK.. It is a 1545 and I am not rooted. That explains it.. THANK YOU.
