Lurker
Hi guys I have a Prime and the problem is the i cant be heard and i cant hear through earpiece either.
Sometimes i may restart it 2 or 3 times and it will all of a sudden work. I found that once it was working again it would screw up again once i changed the battery or just turn off and on the device.
This is a weird situation as the earpiece works fine all the time on whatsapp and skype calling with no problem.
Headphone and speaker phone works all the time aswell.
Software has been changed multiple times and just yesterday i upgraded to Lollipop.
Please dig deep to work this out for me peeps. Im getting frustrated.
Samsung wont help me as its a korean model and i dont have paperwork.
Most shops i have taken it to want to pull it apart but as it works on whatsapp ans skype calling im beginning to believe its a software fix.

It's clearly not the earpiece and mic, as if they were broken they'd not work with any app. So the problem is 2-way and voice telephony only? That could be a problem with the telephony hardware or software, though if you've had a system update and that hasn't fixed it software looks less likely. Possibly a problem with the account or SIM (SIMs do go flaky, though losing network altogether is a more common symptom when that happens). If you have another SIM, or can borrow one to make some tests, it would be interesting to know whether that changes anything. May be worth speaking to your carrier, but they vary a lot in how helpful/useful they are.

It's also possible it's a problem with the telephony-specific hardware or firmware - the other apps you mentioned need an Internet connection, which is a bit different.

Was it always like this, or did th fault start at some point?

The fault stated a few months ago. I still use the phone as im a van driver and use headphones.
I have changed few sims/carriers in that time.

It's an extreme measure but have you tried a factory reset? Other than that all I can suggest is a firmware reflash (although you say you've had updates so they probably won't help) :(
