Help Galaxy S5 Won't Stop Talking

Mogus_1

Lurker
I have a (Sprint) Galaxy S5. All of a sudden the voice option activated and won't turn off. No matter what I tap it simply "says" what it is. If I tap on an app to activate it, it just says what the app is. Whenever the weather updates, it suddenly gives me a full report (temperature, forecast, etc.) I tried taking the battery out for a few minutes, but when I put it back in and turn it on it immediate starts talking, telling me it's on the lock screen and what to do to unlock it, and as the apps that are set to come on at startup begin activating, it proceeds to tell me each one as it comes online. As of this time, all I have is an unusable chatterbox. Please help!!!!!

Hello and welcome to Android Forums Mogus_1 :)

Congratulations! You have activated Samsung's new... "WIFE MODE" ;)

Seriously, it sounds as though you have activated something like subtitles for those with hearing or vision problems. This setting is usually found in... Settings > Accessibility > Hearing > Subtitles.

That doesn't help because I can't get to anything. For example, if I hit Settings, it will just "say" settings, but nothing else happens. If I try to power off, it just says power off, but it doesn't.

I know I'm probably coming off like a total noob, and admittedly so, but I followed the link in your response and found no video. The only thing I found was a pdf of the operator's manual. Let's face it, and I hate to admit it, but you're going to have to approach this as if you're talking to a fence post and walk me through this. Sorry.

Tried wiping the cache partition (no success) and I also tried booting into Safe Mode. It has the same problem, even in Safe Mode.

If it is happening in Safe Mode, that would indicate that it is a firmware setting issue that a Factory Data Reset should correct. See #2.0 of S5 Lollipop Update Problems - Dummies Guide. This will be the first recourse at a Samsung Service Point, if you choose to take it to one, instaed.

Alas, factory data reset didn't work. It's still simply saying what it is with whatever you tap and not activating it. What gets me is that I wasn't even using the phone when it happened. I picked it up and it just started doing it and wouldn't stop.

Boot into Recovery Mode, as you did with cache partition wipe, and this time, select, "Factory Data Reset". As per #2.3 of the guide...

"If your phone is stuck in a boot loop and you cannot access the above method, turn your phone off and just boot into Recovery Mode, see #1.3, (Step #2), and select Factory Reset."

That's what I did. I booted into Recovery Mode and selected Factory Data Reset. It booted up as it did when I first purchased the phone, but when it got to the instructional tutorial for set up, it started talking again. I've wiped out valuable data, and I still have the problem.

If, after a Factory Data Reset, the phone still has issues then you will need to have a stock firmware flash as per #2.7 of the guide. This can be done at a Samsung Service Point or by yourself.
