Galaxy S7 Edge Email Not Sync'ing

Debbie C

Lurker
Hi,
I used to automatically get my AT&T Yahoo email on my Galaxy S7 Edge with no problem. For some reason, it no longer syncs and hasn't since January 6, 2017. Now, I don't use my cell phone much nor do I use it for email much but I would still like the opportunity to do so. I haven't changed any of the settings from before. I did check to make sure the sync is on and it is, supposed to every 15 minutes. Any ideas as to why it is no longer sync'ing and how to fix it? Thank you!

Yahoo instituted some very strict protocols after it got hacked (actually it was the second time it left customer's data at risk) and changed the way users can access their accounts with clients other than the Yahoo app.

If you ever log into Yahoo from a desktop you probably got a pop-up that said to upgrade your security. It was the recommended setting and many people simply accepted it. If you only use Yahoo mail on a desktop or with their app, then it's fine, but if you want to access it using a third party email client or even MS Outlook, you need to turn the enhanced security off.

Log into your Yahoo account on a desktop, then click on the gear icon in the upper right and choose account info. In the left column click on "account security" and enable the option to allow apps with less secure sign in.

You should be good after that, but be advised, you will be reminded (aka nagged) to turn that back off many times.

Thank you for the information, it makes sense. I did as you suggested, logged in via my laptop and got to the "Account Security" but when I clicked on it, the only option it gave was to change my password. I snooped around elsewhere but didn't find anything about enabling apps with less secure sign ins.

My email is set up on the phone pretty much the same as my desktop, with the same server settings etc. If it's allowing my email client to download my email then you'd think it would allow my phone to do the same given the settings are the same. But then I'm applying my logic which is probably faulty!

It should be at the bottom of the Account Info screen

I'd suggest asking Yahoo, but their help is really just a help forum and pretty darn awful. I'm pretty sure it this issue that keeping you from your mail using the built in email client. Have you tried installing the yahoo app? Even if it's just to test that your mail can be accessed that way. The Yahoo app does work with the 'more secure' login.

I haven't installed the Yahoo app. I looked at Google Play and there are a bunch of them so I don't know which one is best. One thing I'm concerned about is that when I delete an email off my phone, it doesn't delete it off Yahoo. I use my laptop email client to manage my emails with folders and all and don't want to accidentally delete something on my phone that I need to keep on my laptop. I guess I'm a little scared to play around and end up making things worse yet I can't contact Yahoo and speak to someone that can give me answers about their service. I do appreciate your help though. I'm just feeling really stuck.

The app you want is https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.yahoo.mobile.client.android.mail and you don't have to keep it on your phone if you don't like it.

Look in settings to find where you can set it to NOT delete mail from the server when you delete it on the phone ... or simply don't delete anything on your phone. If you then want it gone, you can delete it on your desktop and the next time the phone syncs it will drop off the list.

Well, good news, I got my email back. There was a software update today and that fixed one of my two boxes. I then deleted the "broken" one and added it back with a manual pop3 setup so I could tell it never to delete the email and it's now working! Thanks so much for all your help!
