Help Galaxy SII SPH-D710 Power Button issues

Hello all!

I am new to this forum and I have no idea where else to go. My Galaxy S2 side button will no longer power the screen off. Instead it will bring up the shut down/reset dialog box on the first press, which I back out of, then press the side button again and nothing happens for about two seconds. After the two second pause, the notification light flashes pink then my phone resets. My phone only resets when the side button is pressed. Primarily after two presses, but sometimes after just one. If I let the screen just shut off on its own, then it doesn't reset, so it is a problem with the button's function. I have already tried a factory reset and the problem has persisted. I have looked throughout all the forums and I cannot seem to find anything on this particular issue... :(

Side note, this phone is actually a replacement phone because my last S2 had a problem where it just consistently reset itself over and over. Is there a problem with the Galaxy S2 in general? I don't want to have to wait for a replacement for my replacement and I do not want to pay another $50 for a phone, since the first replacement obviously didn't work...

How can I fix this issue?

Well this definitely sounds like a hardware issue. How long have you had the replacement?

If not that long, I'd advise you to call up asurion or whoever you got the replacement from and tell them what's going on and I'm sure they will replace it without charge since it came faulty.

As a former epic touch user, I can say they don't normally have problems, I never did with mine.

I just had an issue with my T-Mobile SII where the power button was jammed. My phone kept power cycling when I turned it on and vibrated while off. I sent it to MobileTechVideos, paid $40 and they replaced the button..Works like a charm and saved me the $150 deductible. Seems common for this device.

Well this definitely sounds like a hardware issue.

Agreed. My Epic Touch was randomly rebooting a few times per week, and I couldn't figure out why. Thought it was the overclock, the ROM, etc. It got worse and worse, 2+ times per day, even after re-flashing & going back to stock speeds. Eventually I noticed that just brushing over the power button would wake the screen and it would reboot ~10 seconds later.

I bought a replacement power switch on eBay, soldered it in place, and have had zero problems since.

Several eBay sellers now offer

mail-in power button repair service for most Samsung Galaxy S / S2 / S3 phones, if you're not the DIY type. (The switch is TINY - about 4mm wide, and you'll need a good fine-tipped soldering iron and a steady hand)

I didn't try it, but have read that some users had good luck going to a Sprint repair center (not a regular retail store), and they fixed it for $35 even when they didn't have insurance coverage. Because it's a defect/failure, not user-caused damage? Worth a shot before you mail off your phone!
