Root Galaxy/Stock android on behold 2 - It flies!

Hello again, Kam. Okay, I have the materials and I've begun looking at things. Annoyingly, I'm not having much luck with using the googles to find a decent tutorial, so I thought I'd do what I can to document my process in the hopes of helping others in the future.

I decompressed everything to my E: drive and have now run ODIN. This is what I can do so far:

My Behold II is connected via USB and USB debugging mode is active. The SD card is unmounted. Any pointers? :) I'm back to hunting.

In the interest of further documentation, allow me to include the full message text (to this point):

On a side note there is a new version of the galaxy system L3.

Use the system.img from this file instead, if you're installing the galaxy system
http://drop.io/i7500zhil3

[updated first post too]

DONT FLASH THIS WITH ODIN!!! Just extract the system.img and put in your sdcard as per the first post here.

Instructions

** You will need an external SD card - at least temporarily **

You will need to unzip and copy all the files to your sdcard:
http://shrunk.me/killtouchwiz.zip

http://shrunk.me/AudioVolume.zip

EDIT: Use the system.img from this file instead - its the latest galaxy system.
drop.io i7500zhil3

so we use the "Edit" one instead of the killtouchwiz.zip, what about the audiovolume one?

Update: I was able to get ODIN to recognize my phone by (once again) reinstalling the special USB drivers under Windows. After that, it was quite clear that the software saw my Behold II. I clicked start, waited and - boom - back to the defaults.

Thanks so much for this! I'm learning so much.

I updated my tutorial files... the killtouchwiz.zip from my tutorial at myhangoutonline.com now includes the new updated system.img file. Enjoy!

I have problem with power button, it is not working, I can't cancel phone call or just return to home screen. Is there any possibility to make this work?

with the update supposedly coming out today... how does this affect galaxy? do we need to odin back, update.. and then flash galaxy back if we choose to?

That would be advisable. The Galaxy software only modifies part of the system files. The supposedly coming update will include fixes to the kernel and firmwares as well as system files that may cause issues if attempting to install over the Galaxy software. Besides I don't think you will receive the OTA update with a modified ROM.

So is anybody going to ODIN back to receive the updates. Personally I don't think it's worth it and for right now I've decided to stay rooted. Besides, I finally have all my apps/widgets loaded up and working at an optimal level and I'm too lazy to do it all over again. :D

ya I use astro to back up apps. Plus if u decide to go back to galaxy rom, there is a system update as well!

I went ahead and ODIN'd back to Behold defaults just see for myself what Sammy is offering us.

If you root, and delete some of the Samsung apps, TW really isn't that bad. The only two things that really get me are the Quick List button and only 3 home screens.

I would love to get rid of some of the TW apps--what apps can I safely delete that might improve its performance? I know if I root I can get rid of Diner Dash and Tel Nav, and a few other things, but are there Sammy apps you can suggest that will improve the performance? There's such a ton of stuff on there that is completely useless to me. Thanks!

There is a thread that discusses this, but I'll give you the quick rundown. Besides Telnav and DD2, I removed the email and mms apps and replaced them with k9 and handcent SMS (I reinstalled the mms apk from the galaxy thread after since I was having issues with MMSs). I also got rid of amazon mp3 the battery data, and the dalvik cache. I can't remember if there was anything else, but that 40 mb file disappeared. I got rid of the stock IM and replaced it with Meebo & AIM. The other thing I did was replace the cal widget with calwidget (which you can set the refresh interval) & took the music player off of my homescreen. I'm happy enough with it to not want to switch to the galaxy rom.

Thanks man, very helpful--I didn't see that thread on a quick search, but I'll track it down if I need any more info.

What really gets me is that none of the icons align and snap in place properly. Everything is a jumbled mess with no uniformity. The drawer on the left hand side as well as the permanent shortcuts at the bottom are also a nuisance and take up too much real estate. It's almost impossible to put a widget bigger than 4x2 on the home screen.

I also hate how some of the settings are missing, and the way they are set up is annoying and confusing

True, but I've been able to use the 'Is It On?' widget, Spare Parts and the 2G/3G widget to get to most of the settings.
