You'd need an app for that, but it also depends on what format your books are in. I'm guessing you are using PDF ebooks? I use Mantano Reader. I just put the books in my tablet's storage, then point the app to that folder.

Welcome to the forums!
Take a look at Aldiko, it supports ePub files and more. You may need to move them into a specific folder, but I'm not sure as I haven't used that app in quite some time.

Mantano Reader supports both ePub and PDF. Aldiko is a nice app, looks better than Mantano actually since it has a bookshelf look like iBooks and it can also download free books. The trouble with it is that it only reads from the internal SD card, so putting books on the external SD card is a no go.

Mantano Reader on the other hand has all of Aldiko's features except the free books and it can be arranged to form a thumbnail grid. Basically it looks like the bookshelf arrangement but a white background instead of a bookshelf pic.

On Mantano Reader, just click on the gear icon on the upper right, choose bookshelf, then import folders, then navigate to the folder where your books are and add them in. Go back to the main screen then press on "import" at the bottom of the screen. The books would appear in the "all" and "without collections" tab. You can arrange them into collections. If you get the paid versions, you can arrange them according to sereis (Harry Potter, Wheel of Time, Sword of Truth, etc), if you have them properly tagged. If not, you have the author, title, rating and date options.
