galaxy tab a wont connect to wifi

My tab was working fine until the other week when netflix stoped working. It says it is connected to the internet but it is not. Ive reformated it, corrected the date and time. Ive done everything i can think of but nothing worked. I brought it to get looked at and the wifi worked fine on the tab there. Once i got home to use it the internet still didnt work. Helpmeplease!

Do you by chance have a Linksys or Cisco range extender on your network? There is an incompatibility with Netflix and Android and I found that a firmware update fixes it.

Do you have any internet access or is it just a problem with Netflix? I ask because my smart TV lost connection to Netflix recently. I had to clear the Netflix data and then reboot the TV. I then had to log into Netflix with my credentials. A Netflix update seems to be the culprit with the TV.. perhaps your tab...

Nope its the internet access. It doesnt work at all.  Which is random because it worked for a year and a half perfectly fine on that tablet.

Have you tried another device on your router? Either your router is not connected to the net or your tablet is not connecting to your router. Resetting your router is in order if nothing will connect to it.
If the problem is your tablet then perhaps forgetting that connection and setting it up again might gain you something. Good luck.

Yes i have many devices connected to the router.  Ive restarted that and forgotten the connection many times.  I have even manually entered the connection myself but still nothing.

If you are sure that you have an active wifi connection to the router then try entering an IP address in the address bar like http://173.192.24.230/ (that's the public ip for this site, if it works you'll see an NGIX admin notice).

Yes i did enter it in and got the welcome to nginx on epel message.  But when i try anything else even good it takes forever to load and says webpage not available or not internet connection

If the IP works then it's a DNS issue. You have a connection but the IP's aren't being resolved to the domain. If you go into advanced settings try setting your DNS server to 8.8.8.8 that's Google's public dns.

How would i do that?  Im not very tech advanced.
Also i got onto my routers online page to see if anything was blocked
I have 5 clients connected to my internet.  Everyone has some small, long number below it except one of the clients.  Would you think that would have to do with anything?

Those little numbers are probably the MAC addresses of the devices. It might be that the device without the MAC address is being blocked as a security measure, but that's unlikely.

Can you take your tablet to a public WifI spot to see if it will connect using a different wireless network?

To manually set your dns server you go to menu>settings>wifi and then select the menu>advanced and you should see a spot for dns settings.

I can try in a bit i would have to drive away because im in the middle of nowhere.  And the dns 1 is set to 8.8.8.8

While the dns 2 is set to 8.8.4.4

Are these the dns settings of the router or your phone? It could be that Google's dns services are down or blocked. Try setting the DNS server to auto or your ISP.

Can you get to the play store or get data on a weather app? Maybe your browser is compromised.

Hey i figured out how to create a guest account for my wifi and it connected fine with that.  Ill let you know if this lasts or not as i highly doubt it will.  But anyway thank you very much for your help thus far!

Guest account ... interesting. It makes me wonder if your router has blocked access for that device based on traffic or improperly formed MAC address. There would probably be something in the security settings to permit that, but I'd be careful because it could open you up to other security issues.

Well this whole thing is just weird because it was working fine for the first 2 years or so and then just randomly durring a netflix episode it started acting up just with the tablet. What should i be worried about?

When setting up the guest account it said the only difference was devices using the guest account cant see the devices using the main accounts.  Im not sure it that matters or not

Sometimes these devices (routers and switches) have security settings to block access based on general rules. Sometimes the rules are too general. If I were to guess, I'd say that the streaming of the Netflix content looked like a DOS attack because it was using considerable bandwidth and the router said "uh-oh, better block this". You should be able to white list the tablet by it's MAC address.

If you disable the security protocols to allow connections like this it would be possible for other devices to use so much of your bandwidth that it would effectively block your internet connection. I would say that's pretty uncommon, but it would be possible.

How do it whitelist it?
