Gaming with g3?

Really considering getting the lg g3 in a couple days... I hear that the g3 can have some bad frame rates because of the quad HD screen. Can someone give me summary of gaming performance and how it compares to the gs5 and m8? Also, I've seen small complaints of ui lag... Is it really justified? And does the phone overheat? Thanks for any help!!!

I have tested it and noticed the device gets very warm at the display area and top during gaming. Battery life is an issue for all devices when 3D gaming, but the Qhd drains even more battery. To offset this there is throttling of both the display and the chipset. That said, the S4 and most other devices get very warm too. I mainly noticed the throttling with emulators, since they are VERY cpu intensive, so any throttling is noticed. 3d MAME games, PPSSPP and N64 are examples.

I am sure there are rooted methods to disable the throttling, but LG put it there for a reason. It will be interesting to see how turning it off pans out for the device.

The one device that seems the best for gaming IMO is the Note 3. It does not get as warm, but is a two hander for most people. I wish I held out several months and bought the Note 3 instead of the S4.

BTW, you can see the throttling when running concurrent benchmark tests. The first ones have higher scores than the following ones. One app test (can not remember which) though is ALL over the place for some reason and has no directional trend.

After all said though, probably best to test yourself :) I can say if gaming is a priority and you do not mind a two hander, the Note 3 is hands down the best overall device for gaming and video media. Browsing too.

Added: I am close to talking myself into the Note 3, since I am concerned the Note 4 will have similar issues like the G3 as far as heat and battery life....

Kind of a shame because I really love the software features on the phone. I think I'm gonna end up getting an m8 tomorrow . thanks for your help, bro

One thing that bugs me with the M8 is the full screen integration with UI and apps. The G3 is MUCH better. MUCH, MUCH, MUCH better. This alone make the Qhd load even more frustrating IMO.

LG has the best set-up if no hardware/capacity buttons.

I wish there would be a feature Where you can lower the resolution to 1080 or even 720 for higher frame rates. Kind of like PC's. Might end up with an s5 instead of the m8. Still haven't made a final decision.

Was it just me or did the colors on those youtube links look better on the S5 than the G3? Kinda disappointing, but I wanna mess with all three phones in person to make a decision.

This perfectly sums up why i decided to stick with the note 3 after initially considering the g3. I do plenty of gaming on various emulators and the note handles it like a champ both in performance and battery life. I'll consider the note 4 but i may just wait for the s810 chips next year... Only problem is I'm not sure which phablet will run that chip with a removable battery and sd card until the note 5

If a heavy user, gamer and emulator fan, the Note is IMO a much better device. I actually tested the Verizon G3 version today. The lack of contrast really shows as well when comparing to the Note 3 and brightness needs to be over 80% to look like the Note 3 brightness at 40%.

The odd thing about the G3 is as you increase brightness, the contrast seems to reduce. There is a fix for this, but comes at the expense of more battery life.

games like gta arnt very optimized for any device.

i play other games like minecraft, need for speed, temple run. and they run just well.
yes the device is going to get hot. its running quad cores packed in a thin phone that has bearly any breathing room. its expected but normal. unless it gets so hot it burns ur hand with 2nd degree burn...

the lag people are mentioning is the normal launcher lag.
lg g2 has the same lag. lg software just needs an update to stabilize the os. its not bad its better than samsungs touchwiz.
switching to nova launcher i get zero lag.

people just think its the qhd display thats causing it. which is not true the display does not use a lot of resource.

Respectfully it does and benchmarks/battery life show it. If a light to medium user of a current device, or a heavy user with an older device like an S3, the G3 will be an improvement. That said, if you already have a Note 3 and are a gamer/heavy user, the G3 is a performance and battery life step back- due to the display.

Also if playing lower resource games the G3 will be fine. It is when the GPU is leveraged the G3 sweats. Still a fine device, but would have been FAR fine for battery and performance with 1080p.

Contrast can be fixed following the tips in the G3 forum. Makes a huge difference.

I've played a few games. Mainly Vector, Combo Crew and Robot Unicorn Attack 2 (don't laugh, it's fun, LOL). Anyway, I seem to experience more heat constantly surfing the web than I do playing any of those games for what it's worth. Also, I can't say I've seen any noticeable drops in frame rate while gaming.

This makes sense considering some apps get scales to their native res (if the app is set up that way), so less stress on the gpu. Web pages though a lot of times are higher res, so more stuff to draw and all the java, etc running as well. Ironic that some games can actually run cooler.
