Root G'day everyone

I am fairly new to Android and trying to find out more about it all in general. Also my phone, which I bought as an unlocked and supposedly untied to a carrier, was full of lots of little programs that I just don't want and will never use. So I am looking to root my phone and hopefully I can avoid bricking it at the same time! After a month of being quite conservative I had my phone to the point that it wasn't usable. All I got was a message to tell me it was full and it doesn't seem to matter how many things I delete I can't even receive text messages. So I will try rooting it and see what happens.
I am finding it a bit of a slow transition from the Windows Mobile phones and PDA's that I have been using for years but I am getting there.
So please be kind to the newbie! :)
Thanks.
