I have recently been weighing up options about my next phone as my contract is up soon. As we know the original VR glasses made for the Note 4 were the innovative edition back in 2014 and getting hold of these isn't cheap, even 2nd hand! The next gen glasses wouldn't even accommodate the Note 4 without modding (cutting)the corner's to fit, so imagine my surprise at finding out that the 2016 Gear VR glasses (for the Note 7 etc) will allow the Note 4 to fit, and work, albeit a tight fit and not officially supported.
The Gear VR SM-R323 glasses are the ones I have just bought 2nd hand for a mere £30 and they work!
One reason I bought them was to play Project Cars through Steam VR, I'm still tweaking the settings and after purchasing an app or two, they work, and the VR is amazing, just haven't got to the best setting for my Note 4 just now.
No they won't charge your phone but an hour or so of racing is enough to begin with, it's a truly immense feeling.
So if I do go for the Note 8, these VR glasses come with two ports, USB-C and micro USB, so don't become dormant.
Thought I'd share this for anyone looking into it.
