Gemini Calendar - my vision of calendar software

Yes, but since Gemini is offered as a free app only (even if is far more feature-packed than most paid calendar apps out there) I think it's more than appropriate to hit the "donate" button on Powell's website.

Lovely App - Donation sent!

I came across this in a forum thread about duplicate events / events appearing as invites in secondary calendars when created on the phone. Your app has removed a great deal of frustration!

The scrolling within the month from day to day is superb; no lag in events appearing in the top half of the window.

Like the way you can import the colours from the web calendar.

Like the way that information about an event is presented when you click on it

Feature requests:
A week / month view keeping the colour coding (like Pocket Informant (WinMo / iPhone))
A "nicer" widget or integration with the PureCal widget (which is superb, imho)
An "Add new event" button on the main screen. Currently it's a l o n g press or a menu & click away

Keep up the good work.

Hi,
any one knows where I can download this apps? heard so much good things about it but can't find it anywhere to download (not even Android Market).

Thanks,
Dan

Hi There,

Thanks for this great app. For the person above, I found it no problem by searching in android marketplace.

Quick question to all users: Is there a way to get conference call numbers recognized? For example, I have a number... 1-800-XXx-XXXX and i have another string I need to enter... On my treo I used 'p' and it would pause, then enter all strings after that. On bberry it was 'x'. Any such feature for android/this calendar?

Wow, I have just come back from my vacation, and I can see many new posts with interesting comments. Thanks, I will read them carefully.

Meanwhile, I have a question to @ndroiduser and @Vim Tailor : do you happen to own the X10 mini or other small screen device ? (screen resolution 320x240)? If so, I am afraid, Gemini is not compatible with your devices for now.

New features in Gemini is already tested and I hope I will release a new version soon.

just downloaded, no complaints, and no bugs found as of yet, everything loaded and set up correctly, took me only a minute or two to figure it out, sprint htc hero

Hi Powell,
Yap, my screen is 320X240 :( I am using a WIdlfire. Guess I will have to wait for more good news from you.

Many thanks... :)

Wow Powell! This is the only calendar app I know of that is at all useful for people with insane schedules. I am a high school math teacher and we have an "alternating days" schedule so the every 2 weeks option is perfect for setting up which classes I teach when. And, the "until" feature allows me to adjust the schedule around the holidays fairly easily. I am looking forward to being able to edit a single event in a series, because that will allow me to change the times for early dismissal days.

I have a suggestion for the multi-dot type of concept that some people have discussed in this thread. In the PIM I had on my old Windows phone, the month view had a tiny bar on each day that was segmented into hours (I guess). Any events on that day would fill in the appropriate hours on the little bar. The color of the segment in the bar indicated the category of the event. Also included were color-coded event categories that could be set by the user. That would be a fabulous inclusion to Gemini so I could tell at a glance what sort of engagements I had on each day without having to click on each one separately. Perhaps this could be a feature available in a month or week view that would open when the phone was switched to landscape orientation - that way you would have more screen real estate to use for each day's section. Or, maybe keep the dots to indicate days with events on the month view and include bars in the week view when (or if) that is implemented.

I have read this entire thread and have seen how wonderfully responsive you have been to suggestions and issues people have posted here. That responsiveness makes this app worth much more than those with sluggish/unresponsive developers and I will be singing your praises to everyone with an android phone. You deserve a lot of credit for your dedication to making this a useful app for the people who are actually using it.

As for your list of upcoming features to be added, can you do a poll on this forum to ask which features people are most interested in having? I know there were several ideas I saw as I was reading through the thread that I thought would be handy and I didn't mention them here because someone else had already brought them up. It might be useful to you to know that there are 63 people most interested in a week view while only 4 are most interested in skins (or something like that).

I will probably find more things to ask about or suggest as I go about inputting my calendar for the upcoming school year, so I'll be back. :)

Donated.

Could you have add a guests field? That is the only thing I am missing. I usually schedule meetings with people, and when the final schedule is done I send an email out to everyone with the final date/time/place. I use the invitation option to do this, as it allows them to one click add it to their calender. That is the only feature I am in need of from Gemini calender.

Thanks
Nkk

That dreaded default Calender does NOT work correctly with Recurring events. It simply is a disaster with No END recurring events.

So I am trying Gemini and LOVE the UI so far.

However when it displays a recurring event that is setup within the default calender, and I edit it, it shows the event as "Repeat year on 9" When the event is actually recurring yearly on the 26th of September. I also noted that I can not edit the date to change it back to the 25th of September where I would like it... Yes I can do that in the default calender... But I am trying to hide it until I get ride of it entirely. Note: When I use my Google calender as the sync to the default calender (vs. HTC Sync) the default calender program still gets recurring events wrong. However within Gemini, the calender dates and recurring events work perfectly. GREAT JOB!

Another question... Within the Choose Calender it shows: US Holidays (ro). Yet there is absolutely nothing in that calender. Where is this calender coming from and why is it empty? I assume my Google calender, but it is empty on the phone vs. on the web which has many events.

One issue with the HTC Incredible phone is the Time Zone within the OS shows the US Eastern time zone as GMT-4:00 when it is actually GMT-5:00. So how much trouble is this going to cause me in all my events I edit on the phone?

One feature I would like is a direct sync from Outlook (not exchange server) vs. having to use a Google calender (for security and privacy reasons).

FANTASTIC JOB setting this up...

GMT-4:00 is correct for the Eastern time zone (EDT) right now during daylight savings time. It will automatically switch back to GMT-5:00 when we switch back to standard time (EST) in November.

Ain't that a kicker... HTC support were the ones to point it out and said it is one cause to the Android phone calender problems.... lol :-(

Version 0.9.34 released.
Only one new feature this time, but I think quite useful. Events that last all day (or more) are nicely displayed, so you will know when they start and when they end. Please, report any problems with this feature.

Now some logistic things. This thread is for you, you may write here about your problems, ideas, opinions. I will answer some questions and solve problems "in public", so other users will not have to ask the same questions again and everybody can participate in the discussion. Some problems however need to be solved individually, so I will sometimes send a private message to the user, who has problem.

US Holidays (ro) is a Google made calendar, which contains holidays (of course ;) ). The signs (ro) mean, that this calendar is read only. You cannot edit events that are stored in this calendar, you cannot add new events. This calendar will never be displayed in the Add New Event window, if you try to edit event located in read only calendar, you will see the error message. I am not sure, why this calendar is empty for @FreeToChoose, it should not be.
If you do not want to see given calendar on the list, in most cases you can remove it on the Google Site (where you can also add new calendars (predefined by Google or made by your friends/coworkers) and create new calendar) Some calendars are not synchronized with Google Site, and those cannot be removed from the Gemini list as of now.

For now, it is not allowed to edit recurrence settings in already created event. If you want to do so, you must delete the event and create it again, sorry.

Guests fields are not well supported in the Android mobile devices (it is the matter of calendar database, as usual), so I do not think Gemini will support them soon.

@Nafod: where would you like the event end times displayed? In the Event details window, or in the main Month View (there is not much free space there) or in the Day View?

I will think of the poll in this thread, to see what are the most desired features for Gemini.

The US Holidays (ro) finally showed up... It took about 1 hour to sync with the phone where my Google calender took about 10 min. So its working now :-)

Sorry about the dumb questions.. but I have tried a few times...

I have set a new event within Gemini and set a reminder 1 - 10 Min before and reminder 2 - 15 min before. The event is a one time event on today. I set the time for 30 min from now and saved it. Nothing happens 15 min or 10 min before the event. What am I missing.

I checked my sound settings and all volumes are max. level.

I am running 0.9.33 that I downloaded from the developers site (trial - un registered)

Things grayed out on the Preferences screen:
- Default View is not changeable
- Vibrate is not changeable (its off)
- All link settings are checked\
- Default reminder time is 10 min
- Default reminder 2 - 15 min.
- Default reminder 3 - never

help....

Reminder question and feature request..

1) If it is a recurring event (say every day this week at 10AM), will it set off the reminders each day at the beginning of the event. If not this would be very desirable as a reminder to a meeting.

2) Can you set a reminder for an event END. I.e. a reminder that the meeting should be ENDING vs. the long drawn out meetings that go on way to long... It would be great to set it as a ring tone to make it like you are getting a call and must end the meeting... If not this would be a good feature.

I read that you are using the Google database, is that why I see the Android Calender app show up in my Advanced Task Killer app routinely throughout the day even though I don't start it myself?

Thanks.

G'day Powell - you're an absolute gun, Gemini Calendar is really getting there.

Here are my thoughts/suggestions/things I agree with in the thread:

* swipe left/right to change months - I understand about the 'accidentally press a day' problem, but the actual HTC calendar does it without any issues? Also the animations still go the same way no matter which way you swipe.

* 4 x 1a widget - I think it's great that the different positions on the widget take you to different things. I second someone's suggestion to make the right hand box a small plus sign to add an appointment. The innovative way Gemini adds appointments is one of its major strengths but at the moment to add an appointment from scratch you have to open Gemini, press menu, press add. One hit from the widget would be fantastic.

* font - given that you're developing for Android and not Apple, I reckon it would be nice to have the days and numbers in the calendar in the DroidSans font instead of the Helvetica that the iPhone uses! This would also give the app a bit more consistency across the look. I've attached it to this post...

* on the look, I think the brushed steel can look a bit foreboding - and all the shadows and textures tend to make it even more busy and cluttered. Especially in the calendar month, which is essentially a grid of numbers with coloured dots and lines all through it. I think it would benefit and look more professional if it was simplified a little.

Powell, you've done an absolutely fantastic job. Well done.

Just to say thanks for a wonderful calendar program.

A couple of suggestions that may or may not be possible are:

  • Have toggles to include the location and/or description (or neither) of the appointment when viewing from the agenda or day, rather than needing to go into the item to see location. At the present time in agenda and day it shows the description of the appointment rather than the location. If a user enters appointments in Outlook, the notes section of Outlook becomes the description section of the Gemini calendar entry. Most of the time this is not needed to be viewed, while the location generally is. If the toggles are possible, I would suggest the order of appointment, location, and finally description as this is the most normal hierarchy.
  • As an MS Outlook user I love the way that I can colour (that's the same as color for the Yanks) code my appointments based on a string of text so I can easily see fun stuff, family stuff and work stuff by the colour of the appointment. Can Gemini have this as an option. (I believe Deja is supposed to bring across the Outlook colours but it is buggy at best.) If Gemini could have a feature added if entry contains the string "Dad, Mum, Kids etc" (user defined) then colour orange and other definable string/colours it would be brilliant, as well as a selling point no other calendar I am aware of has.
Its just a shame we are stuck with the Google database for our appointments. WinMobile synced a lot better for recurring appointments and their editing, but there is not a lot we can do about it till Google starts to actually acknowledge Outlook users and that some people (me) refuse to use the cloud to store their data. Who knows, maybe they will even add an automatic sync for the spreadsheets and word docs that activesync used to do for us.

Once again, thanks for a great calendar. Until I saw this I was almost going to get rid of the new Desire and go back to WinMobile.

Hello again,

For alarms you have options for various things, including one week. I normally set my all day recurring appointments on the PC where I can go 7.5 days and I note this setting is carried into the Google database, and reflected in your program. I do this because a one week alarm on an all day event is set at midnight the week before. A good way to annoy the wife and not overly practical as a reminder to buy a card/order flowers etc or post cheques for bills.

Is it possible to have a freeform time set in the system for your alarms, rather than the presets? A slide bar from 1 to 90 with the option of minutes/hours/days/weeks/months next to it? This would allow a much more customisable alarm setting option and not limit users to presets.

Also, when I looked at the recurrence of a birthday today its repeat was listed as "every year on 8" for an appointment on 16/8/2010 and repeating yearly. I assume this refers to 8 for August.

Finally, my daughter was in Sydney this week for the sat 14th and sun 15th, which I diaried as an all day event in Outlook. The appointment has been carried across to the Google calendar OK and views OK in the standard HTC Calendar. When viewed in agenda and day view on Gemini it shows up as an appointment on Monday 16th as a time of 0:00 to 0:00, even though the end time was effectively 23:59 the day before.

And finally, for the agenda view above the calendar the day is shown (ie 14/8/2010), but not the day of the week. I know the day is visible on the month view immediately below but as an ease of use thing, could it also be included as a part of the date on agenda?

I should say I run a HTC Desire sold by Telstra in Oz, which is currently running 2.1. As an aside I have pure calendar as a widget on my home-view which has an option in it to open Gemini as the default calendar. It was from this that I learnt about Gemini.

Love the new recurrence by day option. Thank you!

I haven't tried it yet, so perhaps you've already allowed notes on single instances of recurring events?

After that, we need a Franklin Planner style day view, with side lines showing the duration of events, and zero time events taking only a single line.

Gemini Calendar is really getting there quickly! I may not have to program my own after all.
