Root General Question About Custom Rom Installs?

Jcol

Newbie
I tend to be quite careful changing things on my phone however I have been gradually updating and with each step the phone has got better so now I'm thinking about new custom rom install. To date I'm running 2.1 but haven't taken the recent update, I am rooted using Zroot, BusyBox installed, Xrecovery and JIT V2. Using Xrecovery I have done a full backup of this rom and I understand I can "go back" by restoring that image. I have also done backups using Titanium (basic) which I assume will be how I restore my current apps if any go missing after the update. So my general question is, with any of these Roms what will I need to save/backup and then reinstall in order to get my phone back to where it is now? Do I need to record and save my carriers network settings and email servers info or are they on the sim card? Can I restore my apps from Titanium basic or do I need the pro version? Will I loose my contacts all together as I did after the 1.6 to 2.1 update or is there a fool proof way to save them? Sorry if these questions have been asked, but I've seen so many posts where people say the new rom works great but I'm missing etc, etc, etc. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

if you create a backup in xrecovery it saves everything so when you restore that file your phone hasnt changed a bit.
its actually brilliant how it works.

It's with xRecovery you want to do the backup.

Turn the phone off....then turn it on tapping the Back button on the phone as soon as you see the Sony Ericsson logo and it will bring up the xRecovery screen. Do a backup there.

Best way I find to do contact backups is with the Sync built into the phone...sync contacts up with my google account.

Then if you want you could load a custom image like Eminence...copy the folder over (with no spaces in the folder name) then do a Restore from xRecovery using that new image...that will put it on there.

Then do a sync again and sync those contacts.

If you want to go that extra step. I did my application backup using AppBrain (using my gmail account)...did a sync before I copied over that Eminence image...that sync'd what apps I had loaded on the phone already. Then after I am done restoring the new Eminence image, I go to the Market and install AppBrain...then login and do a sync..and it batch installs all those apps again.

Think that's it.

Hi :)
I had a similar question ..
there is a procedure that allows a single operation to restore everything?
Now I used the ASTRO application (backup app) and sync SONY ERICSSON for contacts, calendar and bookmarks ..
I still have not tried a restore from TITANIUM and XRECOVERY and it seems to me the closest to my needs to make a full recovery ..
GOOD!

sorry for my bad english..:D I used google translate :p

Google translator did a good job :)

Titanium Backup will let you backup things onto the SDCard, while xRecovery changes the way the phone boots. It allows you to do a full backup and it creates a .IMG file.... Allows you to swap between one .IMG file and others.

I could make a xRecovery backup of my phone running 1.6 and 2.1 and 2.1 custom, then I could start the phone, during startup choose which one I want to load.

I'm just like the OP, but a bit confused. Does the Xrecovery back up do it all? When I restore, does it restore apps/contacts, but leave the new ROM in perfect condition?

A lot of the roms talk about being on the latest firmware (I'm on the first 2.1 generic) and flashing sin files etc. I can figure out how to flash a rom using xrecovery (did JIT V2 that way), but after titanium, superuser, busybox, xrecovery, etc. I don't want to download more stuff for minor improvements.

I just want to know if I can grab any of the roms out there and use xrecovery to load them without having any issues.

Thanks.

With xRecovery you can create an image of your phone's current setup.

It creates an image of what you have loaded.

I currently have one image of my phone before installing Eminence and I have one image of my current Eminence setup.

I believe it saved it all...messages...contacts...everything. But just in case, I have everything sync'd with gmail.

Only image I have loaded was Eminence image/rom

Thank for the info. Do I need to worry if the rom is the latest firmware or not? I'm on .054 (the first one, not the latest).

Thanks.

So I loaded a ROM, but lost all my info. The back up and restore app helped, as did titanium, but there was still a bunch of stuff missing (i.e. playlists on Tunewiki lost), had issues syncing with google stuff.

Xrecovery is good for restoring everything back, but I was hoping it could be used with a new ROM to save apps/contacts and info with the new rom.
