Root General ROM question?

I have just the stock 2.1.1 ROM. I know each of various Custom ROMs have different things that make them somewhat different from each other but here is my question. Is there one "major" thing that Custom ROMs have that should really entice to try one of them? My stock ROM seems fine to me but I have never seen what others can do and I fairly sure once I try one I'll think WOW why didn't I do this sooner. I have read all the "How to" things about Flashing,I have done all the prep work and have all the software, I just trying to make the final jump to Flashing and I just wanted some input from you guys.

Thanks

I could be wrong, but I think most people flash roms for the captivate because it the only way to get froyo right now.

froyo is awesome improvement over 2.1..I am on custom rom...along with froyo...rom dev put other features like lag fixes... faster and efficient modems and kernels....also custom themes..which is not possible in stock....

I have not used froyo features much, but what i liked so far are flash, a default setting to block data usage, easy steps to reboot, or go into recovery....move apps to sd card (makes apps work faster) etc etc...

Thanks for the reply so you using Assonance 5.0?

I think I have to flash this its the only one I have not run. It seems to be pretty stable and alot of people are flashing it.

The oct AT&T froyo leak is on Odin you can flash that if you just want froyo, any issues I hit were dumb things like on the far right home screen there were like 4 spots that launchers would not stick. After you reboot you would have to put the app back up but thats really it. Oh, and a little lag while swiping the answer bar when getting a call, not bad but it does do it. I have to say it ran real stable in my phone.

the latest Cognition is nice too, really cant go wrong with that rom.

Yes. My phone seems to be doing fine with 2.1.1 but I keep reading about all these other ROMs and I love to tweak things....LOL.

Im not real tech person, but I love tweaking things too. I was a flash addict for a while. I've calmed down a little, but I've tried a LOT of roms. If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

OK here's a question.....If I have read correctly Flashing a new ROM doesn't make changes to Kernel or the Modem. First is this correct? Second if this correct is there a need to Flash different Kernel or Modem? Third if you do need to flash a separate Kernel or Modem is this done though ROM Manager after you have new ROM going?

Thanks

Every Rom I have flashed contained the new kernel and modem. If you want to try a different kernel or modem that can be accomplished after flashing the rom.

Why do guys try Kernels and Modems that are different than the ones that come with new ROM?

As far as kernels go, people are typically looking for more speed, stability, or over clocking or no overclocking.

Also, some modems seem to work better for some people than others.

Not correct, however it's worth noting that a ROM Manager backup does not back up the kernel and modem.

These two facts go together: if you make a ROM Manager backup, then try a custom ROM, then want to undo it, your ROM Manager backup will not get you completely back to the way you were before. In fact, it might brick your phone if you try to use it since you'll be running mismatched kernel/modem and system files.

I had read about this. I think my 1st ROM Flash will Darky Port 6.02 which he is suppose to have out this afternoon.

Just curious why this rom over any other? Any specific features?

From what I have read this is Fast ROM and he has built in a lot things. Other guys have raved about his work in that he puts out Fast updates and is very helpful. I am sure most ROM developers are like this but this one just caught my eye.

Very cool. If you get a chance, let me know what you think after trying the rom out.

Will Do. Once I get home from work and check out how 6.02 doing on XDA Forums I am going to do Flash.

Thanks for pointing out this rom. I love the look of it. Have not put it through it paces yet so I can't say how fast or stable it is, but it certainly looks sharp.

Darky's rom(among others) is based on the latest i9000 jpx 2.2.1 froyo build that was released couple days ago, samsung also released a newer jpy build and i think there's a jpz build too that was just released today.
These new 2.2.1 froyo builds have an updated rfs driver that pretty much gets rid of all the lag on the phone, if you're still using a non 2.2.1 build i suggest you upgrade to it.

Doc has a jpy rom out, can't say i noticed a difference between jpx and jpy since they were released only a couple days apart, but since its newer i just went with jpy.

I tried 6.0.2 tonight. I loved the look and feel. Very snappy. But I could not get my data working. Wifi was fine, but no mobile data. I gave up for the night and am back on another rom for now.
