general tune up for browsing speed

sedstar

Newbie
On my rca 10" tablet, droid 4.x...

I am impressed with the general browsing speed.

This replaces my laptop that was stolen and you know a windows PC... Fast when new... Then you get crudded up browsing... You either have a slow computer or you "protect" yourself with three antivirus packages and two firewalls... Then you are slow from all the "scans"

Lmao....

I slowed WAY down browsing with the new droid tablet... Started closing stuff left and right... Finally closed "Walmart" and that took it back to high sped browsing.

I was browsing looking at pretty women if you know what I mean, lol, and it locked up.. Had to close browser but it was okay when I opened back up...

Question...how worried should I be about internet crud on a android laptop? Do iI need firewall and six antivirus programs slowing me down like windows?

the only affect in speed of browsing I have run into is when I have a crappy connection. As far as anti virus i don't use one as I only download from legitimate sources.

However like most machines the more you bog them down with apps and data they will slow down its just the nature of the beast.

So... Viruses and malware only come from downloads? Unlike a PC where you pick up internet crud automatically like motor oil turns dark and needs changed?

I haven't heard of any drive by Android infections .. yet. I'm sure if they're not around already though, they will be soon

Unfortunately, Android now has a similar problem to Windows: it's the biggest player in the market by far, therefore it's the most appealing target for crims developing malware.

There's a lot of nonsense talked about how this o/s or that o/s is immune to exploitation: don't believe it. Some may be more difficult ot exploit however, they hold regular competitions and hackers invariably manage to crack ALL o/s - usually in ridiculously short times.

What makes o/s like say, Apple's less likely to get viruses is not technology, it's economics: it's such a small proportion of the market, for most crims, it's simply not worthwhile attacking it. Why spend time developing an attack that could hit 10% of potential victims when the same time could be spend on attack that could hit 90%?

No OS is totally unbackable, but used properly Android/Linux are pretty close to it. I don't think economics is a plausible reason for the superior security of Android/Linux anymore. They're just better, inherently more secure operating systems.

Android on mobiles and Linux on servers have been very large targets for years and still are relatively unscathed compared to Windows or OSX (even though OSX is a fairly small target). For example, there are still no active viruses affecting Android or Linux.

But no OS is stupid-proof. There's plenty of malware if users allow it to be installed. Risky behavior can have unpleasant consequences. Downloading software from shady sites, or cracked paid software, checking the box for allowing installation from unknown sources, running as root - such stuff can make a device a malware development tool.
