Get a Galaxy S or wait for...?

Hi there
I'm wondering if i should buy a galaxy s i9000 now or wait for the i9200 which might or might not be released in about 2 to 3 months?

long version:

i did some research and came down to two phones:
-the galaxy s i9000
-the desire HD

as i'm living in a european country where we have neither access to the nexus s (well i could import it for around 800$ but why pay 800 when i can have the galaxy for 50$?) nor to the EVO (CDMA onyl afaik) and the desire HD is a bit too large it all comes down to: buy the galaxy s i9000.

and then i read about the i9200 which might be presented at the CES and released shortly afterwards..

soo..what would you do?

Me, personally - I'd wait. If you're looking at a top-line phone, might as well go for the latest.

Rumors abound on what the i9200 really is, so I'd like to also suggest that you keep an eye out for the LG Optimus 2x - dual processor, 4" screen, coming to Asia+Europe first (GSM).

thanks for that fast reply :)
the lg looks promising but i'm not sure about the screen. the galaxys amoled is quite impressive and is definitely a point why i'd go with the 9000 or 9200.
but as far as the 9200 is still more or less a rumour the optimus 2x is sure a valid alternative..and it might be already available in january..
gotta check some lg user reviews now ;)

other opinions?

Wait until CES, it's only a week away. If nothing interesting is announced, buy Galaxy S or whatever else device out now that you like.

Funny enough I have consider the very same 2 phones.

I have been testing/trying the Desire HD for a few days now. And today I got the opportunity to test/try Galaxy i9000. I like em both much...

What I want to say is that the physical size of the phones are quite similar. If you think the Galaxy i9000 is a good size then I'll most likely also like the size of Desire HD.

If displays are your thing, look to see if anyone is announcing a handset with the Pixel Qi (pronounced key) display - hot-switchable between LCD and e-ink so when out in the sun, the brighter it is out, the brighter the display. (Already coming for the Notion Ink Adam Android tablet.) Also, last I looked Qualcomm's Mirasol display was super-promising but wasn't ready then - maybe that's coming at CES, you never know.

I had a Sammy Moment with an AMOLED before going to my LCD. Comparing both to my calibrated HDTV, I found both were erroneous with respect to correct color (the AMOLED was over-vivid and blue-heavy, the LCD was more balanced with respect to saturation but was purple-y). The SAMOLED on the Galaxy is technically better (and I've seen it's better than AMOLED firsthand), but until they give us proper adjustment - including and especially gamma - a lot of that display goodness is just eye-popping at the expense of accuracy.

Given that my biggest complaint having owned both is strong sunlight (I live in a desert you see) I'm all for seeing a real upgrade in this area, not just an incremental one.

Just two more cents of opinion. ;)

PS - The big advantage the Desire HD offers, in my opinion - is the new Sense from HTC - it's quite an upgrade - HTC - HTC Sense

@troll:my roommate just got a galaxy s so i can fiddle around with that one but i don't know anybody with a desire HD. so nice comparison..always thought the desire HD would be much bigger..

@EarlyMon: yes, it looks like touchwiz loses the sense vs touchwiz debate every time. BUT (this one gets a little OT): afaik i can put sense on a rooted galaxy s?!

and very interesting insights about (upcoming) displays :) the Qi will be probably pretty expensive and is rumoured for quite some time now...

i guess i'll just wait for the CES and see what they might announce there:D

You can't really put Sense on a rooted Galaxy S - but you can go with ADW or LauncherPro plus Beautiful widgets to get really close to the UI.

The underlying, actual Sense, is more than just the UI - it's an integration scheme tying various things together. The codebase is copyrighted, so it's not really available publicly - very close copies sometimes - but not really Sense.

In such a case as wanting Sense on the Galaxy, I'd go with ADW or something stable like that and 100% trustworthy to work.

Is the "new" sense different from that which is found on the EVO? I feel like I already have all of these features? (referring to the features in the link EarlMon posted above)

Oh, you betcha, new Sense is very cool.

  • It's a wholesale update to the built-in apps like the browser and Mail
  • Mail update includes - finally - a unified inbox
  • More windows for the browser than our current limit
  • It buffers in Google maps so there's no gray / waiting to update.
  • login to htcsense.com lets you locate your lost phone, lock it if needed
  • There's also some syncing or backup features with htcsense.com but they've changed the blurb, so I can't properly cite it
  • Even more unification of social networking apps (that I personally don't care about, but there it is)
  • Power off is really sleep, so apparent power-on is like - a second or two

Here's more of my babbling with new Sense ported to an Evo (early independent port, so it's buggy, not indicative of stability of official release) -
