Help Get OTA updates for deactivated phone?

Hi, I had an EVO 4G on Sprint and recently got the EVO 3D. The 3D is working on my Sprint line now and the 4G is obviously not active on this line.
I am using it on wifi (GrooveIP, games, Emails etc).

I heard that Sprint is planning to push out an update to the 4G (in the future) to fix the voice search feature. Will I be able to get that (and other OTA updates - if any) for my EVO 4G over wifi? Or will I need to activate it on my Sprint line before I can get the update on my 4G?

On my LG Ally, I was able to get an OTA over wifi so I'd assume it would be the same for the Evo.
