Getting assistant to read recipes

I cannot get google assistant to read recipes out loud on my Pixel 5. I've followed Google instructions but when I say start cooking, it just does a search for sourdough starters! Has anyone got a simple set of instructions for dummies? I think I'm probably missing something obvious and I hate tech getting the better of me!
