Help Getting rid of the garbage!

I have an unlocked X10i which was previously on Orange.
Although it's now unlocked it still has all their crap on there,
i.e.moxier & your Orange.
Is there any way of removing this dross & basically ending up with a generic
"clean phone" which doesn't rely on the carrier for updates.
If yes, then can someone explain in "plain English" how it's done.
I would really appreciate any help with this.:D

I love it how people refer to apps that they don't use as "crap". Just because you don't use moxier, doesn't mean its crap. Its actually a fairly expensive piece of software that has excellent ms exchange capability. The interface is simple and effective, and despite what people have said, it does not deplete the battery except when you are using it. If you use your phone for corporate email, like I do, its a valuable piece of software.

You need to "Flash" a generic 2.1 rom to the phone to get rid of the crap after that you can then root the phone and do almost as you wish with it.

It is not very hard to do but does seam very daunting at first!

Have a read through this thread: http://androidforums.com/x10-all-things-root/272949-flashtool-guide-how-n00bies.html

Read it a few times open up the flash tool without the phone plugged in and have a click around and get used to it and then flash what rom you want. But if you get to this stage then have a read about what other custom roms you can flash.

You can go from a generic SE 2.1 to a custom 2.2 or even 2.3 rom and this will allow you to use Flash10.1 on the phone so you can then view things like the bbc iplayer. You can also install custom themes to the phone and look at Xrecovery that is installed to the phone via the flash tool and this is like accessing the bios on your pc and you can even flash from a generic 2.1 rom to a custom 2.3 rom with a custom theme and flash player in 5 mins!

Do it and free your phone from the SE chains of oppression :)

Just to add...don't be afraid....I'm a complete noob and i followed the directions and got my X10 flashed...it's actually easy but as the other poster said...it "seems" daunting at first.

If I can do it at 51 years of age on my first smart phone...anyone can! :D
