Help Getting started

Noobie :)
Just purchased my first not-windows device.
Samsung Galaxy Tab2 10.1

I have discovered how to turn it on -- but that is all.

Where might I find PDF User Manual.
Q: Do I need Google to to setup the tablet?
Will be used to ...
1. manage NAS to Sonos speakers
2. stream internet TV and video files to TV
Google nags to join up. (On PCs I use other search engines for technical research)

Sorry to be a dork. :o

Streaming to TV will only be possible if you have the P5113 (usa) version tablet.

Thanks "Bosbouer" for your response, :)

Hoping to control a media player (to be determined) with the tablet.
ie, tablet > NAS drive > HTPC > TV

I have a lot more reading ahead of me before I can work out how to setup the tablet. Have managed to connect wifi to router so far.
At the moment the tablet is a large paper weight.

Google currently dominates the tablet. "G" will not let me do anything until I "join/register" with google. I am suspicious of "G", because of their spying tactics, useless (scientific) search results and invasive animated nag advertisements.
(I use DuckDuckGo for targeted technical searches and google for shopping)

I spent hours yesterday reading many threads/tutorials on this forum about "rooting". It was all directed at phones.
Does rooting apply to tablets. ?

Thanks again for your time

The Android OS belongs to Google as far as I know. Suggest you create an account so that you can at least use the tablet. You can add your normal ISP mail accounts and use that for most apps.

Android is Linux based. So I assume I should be able to choose my own OS.

There is a plethora of Linux based OS for towers/laptops. I already run Mint on one of my PCs, I am not locked into any OS just because Microsoft think I should, and I assume the same for my tablet, with Google.
I intentionally bought android to avoid the clutches of big-corp. (Apple, Microsoft, Google etc)

Hence my question about "rooting" the device (and I assume) before Google bloat my tablet with unsolicited crapware.

Q1: Can (or should) I root my tablet before registering with Google
Q2: Must I allow Google to "own" my tablet.

I know I must get "Sonos" app to run my Sonos speakers (from Google.)

Samsung use the Android version from Google.

For rooting I suggest you have a look at this forum: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1596

I disabled most of the written-in apps that I do not use and hid the rest from view.

Even to load Odin, I think you will to register the tablet with Google

Having monumental problems trying to register with Google.
Cannot get past "Security" question, after entering alias name + password.
[Next] button is disabled with the only option is [Back]
And the virtual keyboard.

Samsung user manual (PDF) is ... useless.
It only outlines how to join the Samsung happy-clappy club !

Googled for google help. I just go around in circles.

Desperately need some guidance.

Cannot remember any issues in creating/registering device with Google

Tried your suggestion of using PC -- :)
atleast PC is not boobie trapped with Samsung updates and join-yahoo nags.

Google Account registration
Google will not accept any strong passwords.
ie, 9 characters, upper and lower case + symbols + numbers :stupido:
Minimum characters is 8 and according to G help -- 8 mixed characters is one in a quadrillion chance of cracking

Google help is no help, their you-tube tutorial states exactly what I know.

Frustration meter is 200%

Q: Do I have to apply for G-Mail to access Google Play?

Thanks for your help

Q: Do I have to apply for G-Mail to access Google Play?

Thanks for your help

Something is seriously wrong somewhere. Google accepts uppercase , Lowercase and numbers. Pretty sure my wife has special characters in her password.
Google lives around the Gmail account. Sync with calendar playstore all require Gmail account

Finally created a Google account. :)

How:-
Used PC
Found "Create a new Google Account" via google-search.
Google minimum 8 characters did not work with 3 unique strings.

Created a 12 character password. Mixed upper + lower case + symbols + numbers.

Side stepped creating GMail account, using my regular email address.
Hope that was a good idea? I will never remember to check GMail.

Thank you "Bosbouer" for your patience and help. :adore:

At what point should I root the tablet ?

I have a Google Account (no GMail though)

When I open the Tab2 > swipe to unlock.
There are two very large icons in the middle of the screen
1. Accuweather.com
2. Yahoo News

How do I delete/uninstall them ?

:party::party:

Two options here
1.Tap and hold them one by one, drag to the trash bin that will appear at the top of the screen, hold there until bin turns red. This hides them from view.
2. In Settings scroll down to applications> all> then scroll down to AccuWeather and disable ditto for Yahoo and any others that you do not want. You will come across "System" apps that cannot be disabled

Apps that you have downloaded will show "uninstall" in option 2 above or
you can tap the block of squares in the righthand top corner of the screen which will open all the apps on the tablet. From the menu in the corner select uninstall to remove unwanted apps.

As for rooting my answer would be never.............

Glad you have set up the G account
