Getting the free phone, but don't want to upgrade? Is that possible??

My husband and I was just talking the other day. And we were unsure of the answer, and was wondering if maybe someone here could tell us if this is possible or not. But, anyways... We have multiple lines on our account, his line is the main one and he is up for a upgrade and my line is not but I am needing a new phone. We both have smartphones, but we're thinking about trying to save some money and downgrade his to a dumb phone and just keep my line with the smartphone.

Our question is this, can he get a new phone but not activate it to his line but activate it to my line instead and just activate one of our old dumb phones we have here at the house? Is this even possible, or will this mess everything up? The reason I'm asking is because currently I have unlimited data still, and we were just hoping that if we were to go this route that it would stay unlimited instead of limited.

I know there is the option of him giving me his upgrade, but we were told that if we did that, that it would take away my unlimited data but I didn't think to ask at the time of what we're asking you guys.

Thanks for any input or information you can give us!!

yes its not only possible...... but the only way to keep unlimited

depending where you get his upgrade at theyll probably make you activate it on his line.... then just activate a dumbphone on that line and activate the new phone on your line.... youll be needing an extra SIM card if you have to activate on his line first.... you can get one there

some places will actually just do all the switching for you on the spot..... theyve played this game a few times

I don't think it is possible. They're giving you a free phone in exchange for your two year agreement. You'd be adding another line, another two year commitment. If that's what your asking?

Copestag is correct, you can upgrade his phone, activate it, then immediately activate the dumb phone on his line, (which will then remove the data charge off his line, saving you the $30 per month like you want). Then put the sim card from your existing smartphone into the new one (or get a new one for your line if your old one doesn't have one, or had a different size).

The only thing is you MUST do this through Verizon. 3rd party retailers may give extra discounts, but they also have more restrictive terms on their contracts. If you switch the new phone off your husband's line after buying it from say amazon, they will charge you an ETF. Your best bet is to just do this in the store, there is nothing wrong with what you are doing, so you shouldn't get any trouble. :)
