GIF as Avatar?

okay so ive searched high and low for this but it escapes me, i know we are able to make gifs our avatar but it cant figure out how to do this. the best information i was able to get was that i have to resize a gif to 80x80 and i did that but it still shows up as a still picture.

The file size also has to be under 19.5 kb, if I recall correctly.

Mine is bigger because I've had the same one since before AF tightened the restrictions, so I guess it's grandfathered in. You can also up the size/kb limit by becoming a Premium member.

it is but its not the one i wanted though lol since i dont have any knowledge on editing gifs i couldnt make the one i wanted less than 19.5 kb. it was at 44 kb but im happy that i know how to get animated now and i found a few gif that work too!!

You could try reducing the quality of the one you want to use at Online Image Optimizer: Optimize your GIFS, JPGS, and PNGS online.

But going from 44kb to under 19.5kb is a pretty big jump, and I doubt it'll still look very good.

But who knows - maybe that'll help you with something else, or someone else who stumbles across this thread.

FYI, the 19.5 kb size limit is on all avatars, including premium members and staff, but it is possible to get a decent looking animated .gif under 19k.

The hard part would be finding a good one right at 19KB unless it's under. I wish it could auto resize avatars sometimes to the maximum they can be.

FWIW - animated gifs don't work well for our Tapatalk-using members. The timing isn't respected in the animation and they tend to come out like a blinking colored light.

With a million+ members, the size and no-resizing restriction comes from trying to keep a handle on our server load.

Probably doesn't help, but there's some more info just fwiw.
