Root Gingerbread 2.3.3 rooting technique! (Tested and works)

Method 2 was not tested by me, but it's there as a failsafe to method 1 anyway. ;) It's really easy and takes 1 minute to root... Will test the recovery tomorrow and post a Nandroid in the ROM thread. I'll also try deodexing + rooting + zipalign and if I'm REALLY motivated, I'll slap a theme on there. ;)

Looking forward to a dump of the rom - would prefer to update it that way than doing the official update anyway, since all my systems are linux which of course makes the official method useless.

I never did get my attempt to manually update the thing to work reasonably, although I could get custom kernels to boot somewhat successfully. Not enough to port CM7 or anything though.

I've also sent a note to LG asking for the updated sources. We'll see if they oblige.

Much thanks!

Dump of the ROM is in The Gingerbread recovery thread... It's a full stock no data. Tested and I'm able to jump back and forth on recovery with it. So I can go with Eclair or Gingerbread at will. ;)

Hellooooo everyone!

Just so everyone knows, I found a technique that can root our beloved Shine plus phones!

Follow method 1 instructions on the following link:

http://androidflip.com/how-to-root-lg-optimus-one-p500-android-2-3-3-gingerbread/

MASSIVE PROPS [thesoundofsilence member from XDA]. Go thank him or buy him a beer on XDA if this works for you!

this may be a dumb question,
but shine plus is currently equipped with 2.1 and update was pulled back as of oct-22.

so where and how do i get 2.3 image for shine plus?
the link provided was for optimus so doesn't that mean the rom is strictly for optimus??

or
now that the update was pulled back,
there is no rooting possible (for me anyway) until the 2.3 is uploaded?

Thanks!

Hi,

This rooting technique is for the 2.3.3 image only, not the 2.1 image... So rooting is still possible with the Z4Root app for 2.1. This paritcular root technique is just for everyone who upgraded their ROM already to 2.3.3 and cannot roll back.

As for the ROM for 2.3.3, it is available in another thread I posted, but you need to be knowledgeable enough to install recovery, flash nandroid images, etc.

Method one worked for me however I am not sure that driver install is needed. It seemed to work on mine without it.

As long as your LG phone's ADB driver is configured on your computer (In most cases it is if you use LG PC sync or LG mobile update), then no it's not necessary. Keep in mind this procedure was originally for another phone. ;) I just took it because it works for ours too!

So I successfully rooted my wifes lg shine and have superuser installed. Are there any cool roms that I can put on it now.

Not really, no. We're working on that. There are some tweaked stock roms floating about... check karendar's posts. You need to install a custom recovery partition though to load the custom roms - the Rom Manager app does not work for this phone.

Poke around the threads, ask questions if confused.

My wife really just wants me to put it back to 2.1 as the gingerbread update screwed her phone up. How to I go about putting it back to 2.1. I have downloaded the original 2.1 rom but not sure how to install it.

We haven't figured out a way of rolling back the phone to 2.1 yet. Only real way currently is to send it back to Telus for exchange.

can't I just install a 2.1 rom

You can, and it will boot, everything will seem to work... But your SIM will not detect. The radio (Or baseband) was updated with 2.3.3 and the 2.1 ROM doesn't support this baseband... So unless we figure out a way to rollback the radio to 2.1, the ROM will not work properly.

I don't seem to be able to get ADB to recognize my phone. I have all the lg drivers installed, and was able to update my phone to 2.3.3 with these drivers installed, but for whatever reason I can't access it through ADB. I tried installing the driver pack that was given through that tutorial as well, but the installer just instantly closes on launch and doesn't seem to install anything. I tried the installer on two different computers and the same thing happened. Both of these computers worked fine with my phone as well as ADB when the shine was back on 2.1. Is there anything special anyone here may have done to get ADB to find the phone?

Hi,

The drivers on the root link are for another phone, this is the proper driver for our phone:

Multiupload.com - upload your files to multiple file hosting sites!

Install this, reboot, phone should detect ADB

okay, I installed the driver and rebooted my computer but adb still won't recognize my phone

Damn you, LG. This is the most frustrating device I have owned to date..

Oh, and I do have usb debugging enabled. Maybe there's a certain order I have to connect certain things and enable certain things in?

Go in device manager, do you see this:

If not and there's a yellow interrogation point, you might need to configure the driver manually... Otherwise, just enabling USB debugging and plugging in the phone should work. Hard to say why it doesn't detect your ADB... Did you try the driver update from the LG support tool? (For upgrading to Gingerbread) Does it detect the phone?

There is nothing that says "android phone" or "android adb interface" and I see no yellow interrogation points. Every time I either connect my phone, reboot my phone while connected, or change to usb debugging when my phone is connected, windows update always starts downloading drivers. Before windows update does anything, the lg mobile update tool recognizes the phone without any problem. It managed to stay that way, but then when I switched to usb debugging on my phone, windows update started up again and downloaded drivers that would cause me to go through to whole process again, restarting my phone and re-installing the lg usb drivers.
It seems as if I'm getting some kind of driver conflict, but that's the best explanation I can come up with.

EDIT:
After some more mucking around, I found out the following: While restarting the phone after enabling usb debugging (while connected to the computer), in the device manager there is an "android sooner single adb interface" (or something along the lines of that) listed. The lg mobile update tool is also able to communicate with the phone without any issue.
After the phone is completely restarted, anything labeled with "adb" or anything along the lines of that disappears, and the lg tool can no longer properly communicate with the phone.

Now what happens when I restart the phone without usb debugging enabled:
While restarting, the lg tool communicates with the phone with no issue. Nothing to do with adb shows up in the device manager. Lg tool no longer can communicate with the phone when it is completely started up.

I should also note that windows update is longer downloading any drivers.
