gingerbread and honeycomb

not really sure what these are.. just updated versions of the android OS? I believe my new LG revo is running gingerbread but how do i know? and can i upgrade to honeycomb or how does that work? is there an expected release date for honeycomb?

If you go to menu>settings>About Phone and look for firmware version it will tell you.

2.1 = eclair
2.2 = FroYo
2.3 = Gingerbread
3.0 = Honeycomb (tablets)

Honeycomb is optimized for tablets and never intended to be used on phones. Gingerbread is the latest for phones. The next release scheduled for 2012 is Ice Cream Sandwich.

Yes to the first question. Honeycomb is for tablets. The Revolution is shipped with froyo, 2.2.1 I believe. You have the option of waiting who knows how long for the official gingerbread update, or rooting and flashing a gingerbread rom.

is that to say that verizon will eventually release an offical gingerbread update that could be applied without rooting? that would not allow you remove bloatware like you could if rooted, correct?

The Revolution is expected to receive the gingerbread update this summer sometime. But sorry, rooting is the only way to remove bloatware.

so gingerbread seems to be just as good if not better than froyo... what are some reasons not to root? between free tethering and what appears to be full access to memory and apps ive only seen the positives

Rooting voids your warranty. And it's also possible you may brick your phone if you don't read carefully. It's a good idea to read up a lot before you do anything. But every phone is different, some are easier than others, so you have to find instructions specific for your phone.
