Well udated to gingerbread ota by going to the settings and updating today. Anyone know if theres away to root it yet?

the rooted version is at the top of the droid x all things root page, its the first sticky

Currently there is no way to root the OTA. THE ONLY way to have root on 596 is to flash the pre rooted rom.
