Gingerbreak and z4root not working

Rooted my Optimus V with no problem from Froyo with Gingerbreak. My friend has an Optimus S and wanted me to root it, and after a little investigation I learned I had to downgrade from VH to VD back to Froyo, which I did successfully.

Now, Gingerbreak or z4root aren't working to root. Gingerbreak gets to the step where it installs script and comes up with an ERROR. Could not extract assets!

z4root gets to the last step of root shell and then force closes.

I reboot... try again.. etc. etc. and it still doesn't work.

What am I missing? Thanks!

I've never got z4root to work on the optimus S although i did get gingerbreak to work both times ive rooted my phone. Have you made sure all the correct settings are enabled? USB debugging?
