Girl eaten by a bear, while she talks to her mom on the phone.

My instinct there would still not be to call my mom. Call 911 maybe. Try to fight the bears off even though they're way bigger and stronger than me maybe. Call mom would be the absolute last thing on my to do list. If the bear mauled me and then left, I would do my best to call 911 and get the hell out of dodge before it returned.

This was in Russia. The authorities are going to do a whole lot of nothing there...

Well, she called them (not mom), they arrived, found both dad and daughter dead - hunters caught up and killed the bear.

Not unlike our procedure here (or at least what it used to be) - when the situation is critical, rangers will call for expert help putting down a man killer.

Bears are neither slow nor pensive - once one decides you're toast, without something like a lot of skill and appropriate weaponry - you are indeed toast.

Two things.

I didn't say this out of disrespect. I said this because I have lived in Europe and have relatives who have lived in Russia and that is just how they do things.

By the sound of the article, there was time for an hour long phone call. There was plenty of time there to change the bear's mind (about the fact that you are toast). I have yet to read about an hour long bear mauling in the US where authorities were informed at the beginning and essentially did a whole lot of nothing. Certainly, I could be wrong.

I didn't take you as being disrespectful, some miscommunication happened.

If you can read Russian, here's the account:

???????

Here's what I can read -

Bear Kills Man, Daughter In Russian Far East - Radio Free Europe / Radio Liberty 2011

I know of one case here in the West where authorities were called in to deal with a wounded bear (maybe not the same thing as an upset Mama Bear, but dunno) - and they pumped rounds into him for some time before he dropped. Some idiot put a .22 round into his skull - it created a slight crack that made him nuts - he rampaged for hours.

Response into the wild is never quick unless you're calling in an air strike, imo.

Relax . . . it is a viral video for "Mr. Bojangles Brand Solvent and Bear Attractant" gone wrong. Sometimes things get out of hand.

The miscommunication was on my end. I reread my post (as quoted) and it seemed I may have come off rude. I was aiming to correct that and obviously failed worse the second time than I did the first! ;)
