Root Give me guidance

I have read a lot of information lately on rooting, ROMs, Kernals, and the like (even checked the recommended threads that came up when I posted this one). I went from "what are you talking about," to "starting to understand," to "wait, hold on," and finally, where I'm at now, "Overload!" I feel bad being one of those people who add a thread to a forum that has been added time and time before, but I figure if I just tell you what I want, you can all give me your own guidance.

I'm looking to benefit from rooting, specifically, by:
-1) Having Gingerbread (maybe AOSP or Vanilla)
-2) Getting better battery life
-3) Having a faster or smoother phone

I know that some of these benefits happen by fulfilling other ones on the list. I also know that I may have to give some to get others. But what do you use, which of these benefits o you get from it, and where can I download it? I still have questions on backups, kernals, and such, but they can wait.
-Thank You

1. For gingerbread asop or vanilla .. I suggest miui or cm7. Both asop and both very good.
2. Every rom installs some software. Cm7 and miui don't seem to install very much that isn't.needed.

For.best battery I use Chad's incredikernel for either of these.

Both are updated regularly. Miui weekly. CM7 sometimes daily.

I go.to xda for where.to download. Miui is from miui.us.

Questions.on backups can not wait. Do a nandroid right away.

Okay, then can you easily do multiple nandroid backups in Clockwork for multiple ROMs? Does an update for, say CM7 require me to backup and wipe? Does a nandroid backup include my chosen kernal?

You can.backup as many roms as you have room on your SD.

Your nandroid does.backup kernel too.

I just read it again, but I did read it before. I've used unrEVOked3 before on an eris I rooted, so I am kinda familiar with the first steps, but I never installed or backed up kernals. I always used the kernalsthat came with the roms. I just started really looking into kernals, really. I will say that I benefited from another read, though. Thank you for the direction sdrawkcab25.

Okay, so I rooted. Thanks to the community for all the help with that. As far as a solid, Gingerbread ROM, I also will take Froyo, as I can wait for the OTA ROM. But either will do. I'd still like to try Android as Google intended it. Just let me know what you like.
