Giving my contacts there own sms tone

IIRC you need to use a third party app like Handcent or ChompSMS

I may be wrong, though, as I haven't used the native SMS / MMS app in a while....

I second that as well...been using handcent myself since december...Now I know which messages I can ignore while I'm at work.

You have to disable notifications in the built in SMS. Some folks also said to disable retrieval of them, but then if Handcent fails you have no backup and may miss a few (or many) SMS.

your choice.

handcent by far the best.

What is the disable retrieval you are talking of. I know of notification disable but this is new to me.

Messaging app --> menu key --> Settings --> Auto-retrieve

Some have said this needs to be on for Handcent to work, but others have said this actually causes the message to be retrieved twice, b/c Handcent retrieves the messages on its own.
I really don't know, b/c I stopped using Handcent b/c of the size of the app and the instability of it as I switched from ROM to ROM to ROM.

I use the Tasker app to read the message from certain people out loud using the Text-To-Speech feature. So you should be able to do this with the Tasker app, since it also allows you to play custom sounds. This thread contains a lot of useful information.

though I use Handcent and it will do exactly what the OP wants - you can assign custom tones to SMS people, assign them custom icons that show up in the status bar, customize their bubbles and notifications, blah blah - no app is more customizable, Tasker is a powerful tool. Not needed to do what the OP wants, but it is awesome and I use it daily in so many cool ways.
