gmail and activation question

a friend got a casio commando
they activated in the store
no one asked about a gmail account or anything

how did they do that without putting in a gmail?
or did they put something in and not tell him?

they were out of town when it was done, but may be able to call the store

You dont HAVE to sign in to get into the phone. It can be set up now and at a later time an account can be added under accounts and sync

Don't assume. Take a look in Accounts & Sync and see if a gmail account was set up.

you can activate an android phone.. without google account!!
you can make calls and use services from the phone carrier.

you just can not get any access to android market or any google provided service (google voice) till your sign in with a google account.
