Help Gmail app and vibrate or silent mode

Think I'm going mad as really cannot work this out

I am using the gmail app on the s3, and when it is in normal mode, I get a notification via icon in the status bar, a vibrate and a tone, however when I put it into vibrate or silent mode, I was expecting it to just vibrate and icon in vibrate mode (not tone) and nothing apart from icon in silent mode

However, not matter what mode I am in, I am still getting all the notifications .... I'm I missing something here, as I can only find an option to turn the notifications off in the gmail app

I thought it would take the settings from the phone?

If you are wanting it to vibrate without sound, go into the G-Mail app and change the ringtone to Silent and set Vibrate.

I know you can do that, but that is changing the email app everytime. Should it not take the settings from what profile is selected?

I think I am going mad (probably lol) .. it seems that when I am in silent mode on the S3, I get no vibrate or sound .. however, in vibrate mode I still get the sound and vibrate notification ..... CONFUSED.COM

InSetings> Sound you need to check always vibrate or something like that.
