Gmail App

Just moved from K9 app to Gmail app primarily cos I'm on a 500MB a month plan with Orange & Gmail is push so trying to save some data cos I get close to my allowance every month.

I have a couple of questions:

1) Is it possible to switch off the conversation view in the app so separate emails are downloaded?

2) In K9 there was an option to remove the message from the server when I delete it so I don't get the messages again when I sign into my home PC but I can't find a way to do this in the Gmail app. Is it possible?

1) You mean so that you don't see related messages all linked in a "thread" of emails line in SMS? You do this via your PC - Gmail > Settings > Conversation View Off.

2) The GMail app does this automatically as it is only a tool to "view" the server but the frequency depends on how often you sync it ... in your phone's main menu Settings> Accounts & Sync > Google from there you can usually choose your sync settings (e.g. automatic, on refresh etc)

I've done that which has worked for the mail on the server but still shows conversation view on the app on my phone.

Can't see that on mine? I would've thought there was a setting somewhere in the app to select that the message is deleted when I've deleted it from the app but can't find it.

You won't see significant data savings in going from pull to push. K9 could have been configured as push for gmail (set up as IMAP). I'd suggest digging deeper into your data usage to see where you're using the most data and addressing that. It doesn't help to tweak things that don't use much data if saving data usage is your goal.

Deleting from the app should delete it from the account.

Are you using the gmail site on your PC or a desktop email client? If the latter then how is the desktop email client configured to retrieve email from gmail?

I'm downloading the mail from my home PC by Windows Live Mail but that isn't that isn't the problem as far as I can tell it's the app itself.

No matter what I do when I've finished with a message, whether I delete it or archive it, the message isn't deleted from the Gmail server online so WLM downloads all the messages I've had throughout the day.

I should say I've got a HTC Desire.

1) yes you are right... the conversation view doesn't change in the app so it seems to be the default/only view in the app.

2) no idea why deleting from the phone doesn't show up in your PC view as it should do once synced. I presume you have checked directly in the gmail client on your desk/lap top to confirm the app deleted mails are deleted there?

1) Thanks, doesn't seem to possible :(

2) Me neither, think it's something to do with the way I have WLM set up so I need to have a further look into that.

I thought it was just me! I have spent so much time looking for a way to turn off conversation view in gmail on my phone. I can't believe it is not an option to turn it off. Please Google, give us a choice how we view our email on our phones!
