Gmail Attachments

I use gmail. I get attachments. I am trying to find a means to be able to save these attachments directly to SD card.

For example,

jpgs/png/gif, not a problem
docs/xls/txt, I can peview, but not save them
problem is if I get a 3g2 file, I cannot preview or save the file. Sometimes I get videos from client's phones and I can nor longer view them remotely. With my winmo phone, I was able to at least detach them to the SD card.

Bottom line, is there ANY way, app or otherwise, to just simply have a "download" button?

Thanks.

I had the same problem, so I simply set my gmail up in my "Mail" app instead. I left gmail set up in the "Gmail" app too, as I think it has to be in there to synch contacts and stuff.

It is a piece of cake. The default "Mail" app already knows the servers and ports needed and setup takes only the email addy and your password.

I just downloaded the free version of Blackmoon Attachsave (Android (Blackmoon Info Tech Services)) from the Android Marketplace.

You don't run this app; simply preview the attachment in the GMail app and up pops a window with the Blackmoon option. It then allows you to open a browser and you then save the file anywhere you wish.

Only tried it on a few files. Seems to work well.

The HTC mail app allows saving of attachments to the SD card.

I just setup my gmail account in the HTC mail app, and set the update to "Manual". Whenever I get something in gmail I want to save, I open the HTC mail app and hit sync, then I can save the attachments.

Yes, it sucks. At least I can do it without using any other apps that want access to my password though.

Android will only let you download attachments if it is a file type that the system recognizes as "supported", which appears to be a security restriction. I'm not sure what its guidelines are for "supported", but certain files (like mp3, txt, etc) are "supported" and can be opened/downloaded as an attachment. Even trying to download the attachment from gmail.com, it said "download unsuccessful - The content is not supported on this phone". I could download a .zip or .txt file, but not a .xml file (I was trying to get my Google Reader feeds from an exported OPML file).

So, if you want to download an "unsupported" file, you can simply change its extension to something Android supports, like .txt or .zip, then email it to your Gmail account. You can then use a file explorer like EStrongs or Astro to name it back. Blackmoon I believe steps in front of Android's file type checker, which is easier, but I prefer not having to install another app.

Hey, it's pretty easy to save attachments, using a free android app. It's called "Save my Attach", get more details and download link here.

Lemme know whether it works out smoothly or not, but do read the instructions given in the article first. See You!
Thanks! Great app ... though I wish it had a browse function when setting up a 'save to' location. It makes you type in the location, which I can not remember many times. A 'browse' button would be a nice added feature. Like we can do on PC's.

I kno this reply is quite outdated... When gmail is opened in the phone browser, go to the bottom of the screen and select Basic HTML instead of Mobile. That would give the option to download...

If you can't get this to work, you could always to try the following:

On your laptop or PC,
Open Gmail,
Click on mail,
On the attachment select download,
Save it wherever you want,
send to your android device by bluetooth...

Just done this and it took less than 10 seconds.

In the UK you can get a USB bluetooth adaptor from any pound shop...

i agree, we should not have to use the browser to read our email and save attachments. it totally defeats the point of having a gmail application to begin with.

i cant believe this feature isnt in these phones.

Totally agree! can't d/l a file using the app? What's the point. Seriously? C'mon guys!

Hiya folks. This is an older post but I didn't see any one suggest download all files that works for me. It must have been only a day or two that I found out about the limitation and fixed my problem. I can't quite remember all the ins and outs of it but it will save to where ever you browse to...and maybe it can set a permanent path...haven't use it in a while so you'll have to look into it.

Save My Attach
Lexa

Works well to save any attachment to sd.

Agreed.

On my Orange San Francisco (ZTE Blade) running Android 2.1, this works seamlessly with the Gmail app. Just tap on the preview button and then 'Save My Attach' will be on the menu. Nice and simple.

Thank you for recommending this... it means I can get rid of buggy K-9. :)

using the browser to try downloading an attachment "fails" on my phone -- Tmobile G2 (HTC). Android 2.3.4.

May I add that this is ridiculous, irritating, aggravating and hard to believe.

Okay, I am new to Android, however, it is operating much like a PC.
I set-up my Gmail as IMAP
Advantages:
1. Push email.
2. Real time deleting, archiving, etc. What you do on your handheld is what happens in Gmail on your PC and vise versa.
3. When there is an attachment, scroll down to the bottom of the email and two buttons exist, "Preview" and "Download"
4. Select Preview and the document (word, excel, pdf, etc.) open in the native application (QuickOffice) preinstalled and it is very good.
5. Select "download" button and a pop-up asks what native app you would like to use if there are options (for me, Kindle for Android and QuickOffice) can both read pdf files for instance. The file opens in the native app and, yes, there is no menu option to save the document. HOWEVER, go to the native application (QuickOffice) in this case and open Qickpdf.
Then select SDCard. Look on the list for the file "download" it will have the date of the most recent download. Select the folder and open up your file. It has been saved to the SD card in the download folder by default.

I agree that this could be more user friendly so I may try the free app mentioned in this thread.

Sending an attachment in GMail is not as user friendly either.

Go to MyDocuments and select the files you want to "share." Can select a list of them with the check boxes. Would be nice if the native Gmail app would provide access to the on board file directory, but not right now.
Anyway, no ad-ons needed, just have to grab the files from the files first before composing an email. ;)

Well for me, downloading an attachment, from an e-mail, is really easy. (As long as it isn't over the 5 MB limit set by gmail.) I press the attachment and it downloads to the "Messaging" folder, in my case, to the internal storage location. ( I have mine selected as the default to save stuff to.) I can then move the document from the "Messaging" folder to any folder I want. To view the document, I use "QuickOffice Pro" Composing an e-mail, with an attachment, is just as easy. Once in a new e-mail, I press menu and select "attachment", find my document, picture, etc. and attach it to the e-mail, then press send. Nothing to it.

as of now, clicking the download link on gmail does nothing.

so, they really do not want you to download files.

update: may be dolphin lite being dumb. when i open it in a new tab, it works.
