Help Gmail contacts appearing in SMS

Whenever I create a text and go to send it to someone, all of my Gmail contacts (to include people I've only sent an email to once and never even added to contacts) appear alongside all of my phone contacts. This is annoying as I have well over 100 email addresses appear. How can I stop this crap? If I want to send an email, I'll use the gmail app. If I want to text, I use the SMS program.

Note, this is not a problem when I go to contacts, just SMS. I could just create a new category and add all of my phone contacts to it as a workaround, but that's a ton of work.

Thank you for the reply, but as I said, this isn't a problem with the contacts program, but the SMS program. I cannot even get these email addresses to appear in contacts, but they appear in the texting program when I choose who to send a text to.

I've also recently discovered this happens when i go to add a number into an existing contact. I had work call me from a new number, so I clicked to add to my contacts and I got a huge list of every email address I've ever written to.
