Gmail email account

Is there a way I can configure the email account to my Gmail to use a different email address? I have my own domain name (through godaddy) that uses email forwarding to send everything to my gmail account. In gmail itself, I have my account configured to use that domain name.

But I don't see a way to have my phone use that address in the From line. :(

If you log into Gmail through the web page, there should be a tab that allows you to set the from address to your own email address. You can set this as a default. Then in your Gmail app, it also defaults (most of the time) to use this other email address. Note that when performing some functions, it defaults to the Gmail account, so be sure to check the from field. Once you set it to send from another address from the Gmail web page, your Gmail app should give you the option to use either address in the from field.

No dice stuntman. :(

Configuring the email account on the phone using the "Gmail" icon forces the From line to use the userid@gmail.com address, regardless of the settings I have in the native Gmail settings.

Trying to change the email address of the already working address causes the existing account to get wiped out. Which would be ok, IF I could figure out how to set the "Root Folder Path" to [Gmail], so it would properly see all of my other folders....

Instead of using Gmail (as in the app), I use the stock email (or K9, if you choose), for all my emails (gmail, work and personal domain name's email). When I send emails, I can choose any of the email accounts I have as the default sending one. In other words, when I send emails, I click on a drop-down button for sending emails, and I choose the account I like the email to be used as the sending address.

From your Gmail web page, go to Settings, Accounts and Imports tab. In the section, "Send mail as:", you can add another account by clicking <Send mail from another address>. There you can enter another email address. Then you can make it the default.

This is what I do. After I got my Adroid phone, I forward my emails from my regular account to my Gmail account. I then set up my Gmail account to send email as my regular account. This way, I don't have to tell everyone that I changed email addresses. In my Gmail app, I can actually select which email I appear to be sending from. I have other email accounts that I also import into Gmail. I actually default it so I reply using which ever email address received the email.

I do the same thing that Sanibel suggested. I have my personal domain email forwarded to Gmail like the OP. But I use the stock email (not gmail) app on my phone with an account that accesses the Gmail account, but I've got the "Account name" and "Your name" set to my personal domain email address.

Indeed, in other words use gmail in a pop3 client on your device.

Assuming for a moment that I use IMAP rather than Pop3....

Will this still auto-sync my gmail contacts as well (from what I can tell, this is one of the benefits of configuring it as "gmail")?

Why don't you just directly set up the account if it is IMAP? If it supports IMAP idle it's push and you won't have to deal with any of this.
