Gmail Just Erased All My Contacts During Sync

I was trying to update my contacts on my Gmail account with exactly what is on my phone so I went to sync and the stupid thing erased all my contacts off my phone.

Any idea how I can push all my contacts from my phone to gmail once I do a backup, thank god I had mybackup app.

I'm literally sitting here watching my contacts get deleted it does it one by one after I hit sync contacts in settings.

How can it do this, so sync means delete all your contacts off your phone how does this make any sense at all.

I'm getting really annoyed at this.
