Is there a way to have it blink indefinitely when new mail comes in?
I think currently it only blinks for like 2 minutes.

Not sure if it will do it without the need of a 3rd Party app. Have you tried Light Flow?

Can we get different colour LEDS on the One X then?
Just the red & green unfortunately. I think the Nexus devices are amongst the only ones with different colour LED's.

I tried this out and it didn't work for me. Even tried changing the settings to direct. If i leave it on the default run mode the Light blinks continuously for no reason and i cannot shut it off.
I'm not sure then, sorry! Tasker might have a setting, I'll mess around with that.

The way I know if its gmail app or not is that my Vibrate has a different time delay between vibrates than phone calls and emails etc lol that may seem quite random but it's got me through....
