I have both my Incredible 2 and my MacBookPro check my gmail fairly regularly. They all seem to be doing that correctly however, if I delete something on my Incredible 2, it deletes it both at the actual gmail account AND my iMail on my computer. I want to be able to delete e-mails selectively on/at the 3 different places. Another words, there are e-mails I want deleted OFF my cell but not off my computer and to manual delete them in my g-mail.

I can not find where I would change a setting for this.. I have lost a few e-mails I need by accidentally deleting them off my phone only to find they have been deleted the other 2 places too. This happens to emails for "flagging" or marking as "fav" too, which isn't a big deal.

Anyone know where or how to change this so I can still "GET" e-mails but selectively delete them at the different locations rather than universally?
 
You can't do this as all the emails are held on the google server and the different devices only give you "views" of the server (with some local caching).

As a result you delete from one device you are actually deleting from the main gmail account and it shows up everywhere.

The handy thing is that you don't have to worry about memory space as the 100s of emails aren't stored locally on your drives.
 
it Used to be you could leave on the server for a period of time, any chance of that with gmail? and once an e-mail is downloaded into my Mac, shouldn't it be safe??

That's the thing...you don't "download" it to your Mac.. you only view it from there.
 
No worries and you can't i'm afraid .. it's a web based email.
 
So that means my Phone is going to become overloaded if I need to save e-mails.. wow.. doesn't seem practical or a good idea to use a web-based e-mail for official things. :( Thanks though
 
Why are you trying to save them to your phone? Just leave them in your gmail account (under different labels if you need ..you can create rules for those) and they will always be there for you without using any of your hard drive memory (in your phone or your Mac)
 
That's the problem, I don't want them on my phone at all.. I want them on my Mac.. but when I delete it off my phone, it leaves my mac also. I like a clean phone (no e-mails stored) but if I clean it up, I loose it everywhere.
 
You have to stop thinking of them as "stored" on your phone as they aren't; they are sitting on the gmail server. All you are shown is a couple of days view... if you scroll down to the end then you see you have to "download" more if you want to see older emails. It doesn't use any significant memory on your phone at all. Closing the app closes the view until you open it again. "Cleaning up your phone" is in fact cleaning up the server.

You have to think if the Gmail app as a temporary doorway/portal to the server (same as your Mac). This is why you can view your gmail from any pc in the world and still be seeing the most up to date version of your email account.
 
OK, that makes sense... I am digging through gmail now as it appears I need to get used to using that better. As you said, set up rules and such like I have on my computer based e-mail. (hope it's easy to learn - my brain feels full today! LOL) That way I don't lose things that may be important.. You have been VERY VERY helpful... Thank you again...
